Iran nuclear talks 'virtually stalled', deadline may be missed: TASS

Jun 12, 2015

Moscow - Nuclear talks between Iran and six world powers have virtually stalled and a deadline for a final deal may have to be postponed again, Russian news agency TASS quoted a diplomatic source as saying on Friday. Iran and the powers -- the United States, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany -- are trying to reach a settlement by June 30 under which Iran would curb its nuclear program in exchange for relief from economic sanctions.

The United States has said it stands by the end-June deadline for the deal, meant to assuage Western fears that Iran is working to develop a nuclear bomb. But other officials have indicated the date might be missed as negotiations about technical details drag on.

The latest round of discussions in Vienna on Friday had made no significant progress, the source from one of the missions said, according to TASS. "The process has virtually stalled, there is risk that deadline will have to be postponed again," TASS said the source added.

The French continue to insist that IAEA inspectors have the power to inspect and take samples at any suspect facility or location. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius - "The agreement needs to be verifiable, solid, robust and right now we don't have such a guarantee." Other sticking points include the procedure for agreement violations and Iran complying with an IAEA requirement that all possible military dimensions (PMDs) are to be made available to the IAEA.

From my understanding, the final main document will consist of ~20 pages plus five annexes totaling an additional 40-50 pages.

Considering the source, I would assume ANY final document would consist of page after page of gobblygook designed to give the impression of having done something with absolutely no real desire to do anything at all.

"Well, we've done our job, now".....
