Bernie Sanders wants to take back “family values” from the GOP

Re: Bernie Sanders lays out REAL family values platform

"Socialistic libertarian"? You're kidding, right? Is that like dry water?

It's like being for Social programs and against the Republican-styled authoritarian police state.

Sanders is revered by The Communist Party USA. Nuff said. ;)

Bernie's not a self described Communist, but a self described Socialist.

Yup. Just wanting countryboy to back up his invective.

Re: Bernie Sanders lays out REAL family values platform

There are two kinds of people in the world, those who divide things into two groups, and those who don't.

So you and I would be one of the former.

Now. If he' so independent instead of a liberal democrat with self-affirming delusions, what issues does he vote with the Republican Party on?

Socialism and liberty are the opposite of each other. There can be no such thing as a "socialistic libertarian".

Bernie Sanders founded the Congressional Progressive Caucus. The Communist Party USA refers to the CPC as it's "allies in congress". Not sure why you would try to refute this, you know full well Sanders is an unabashed socialist.

A distinction without a difference.

And that my friends is how it's done. Don't ever concede BS talking points put forth by your opponents... own it yourself.

Right out of the gate Sanders dishonestly frames the beliefs of Republicans:

"When my Republicans colleagues talk about family values, what they are talking about is oppsition to a woman's right to choose, opposition to contraception, opposition to gay rights."

Let me address them one at a time.

1. Oppsition to a woman's right to choose - Republican's aren't trying to prevent women from making choices, many simply believe that abortion is the killing of an unborn child, a human being growing in the womb. This is not about denying rights to women, it's about protecting the rights of a child to be born, grow and have the same opportunity to live their lives as we all have. Most Republicans are "pro-life" or "anti-abortion", and are not for the suppression of woman's rights as the characteization by Sanders implies.

2. Opposition to contraception - The over whelming majority of Republicans do not advocate banning, or criminalizing the use of contraceptives. They are not pushing legislation to make contaceptives illegal in the US. Many may oppose their use personally, and in some cases by others based on religious beliefs, but there is no movement of any significance I've heard of to prevent their purchase or use. Many republicans, including myself, are opposed to schools handing out contraceptives to children without their parents permission, and opposed to the government using public, tax payer funds to provide them free of charge to people. Personal opposition to contraceptives, whether it be for religious, moral or financial reasons, does not equate to an effort to deny people access to them as Sanders implies.

3. Opposition to gay rights - This isn't about suppressing the human rights of homosexuals, or treating them as second class human beings, it's about the issue of same sex marriage... or should I say the changing of the definition of marriage. That's really all this comes down to. Many people on both sides of the isle believe that marriage is defined as the joining of a man and a woman, therefore are opposed to same sex "marriages". Most however (with the exception of the hard-core religious sect) are not opposed to civil unions. Even president Bush, a religious man himself, publically stated that he did not oppose, nor would stand in the way of any state that adopted laws allowing civil unions for same sex couples. While there are many people in America, democrat and republican alike, who believe homosexuality is morally wrong, their is no active movement to criminalize homosexuality, or any support for the discriminatory treatment of gays and lesbians. Disagreeing with certain lifestyles is a persons right, but such disagreement does not equate to mistreating, discriminating against, or denying rights to gay and lesbian people as Sanders implies.

I hit the play button intending to watch the video from start to finish, but after listening to the first 26 seconds it became clear that his speech was going to be nothing more than a political pep rally designed to fire up his far left base, so there was no need to continue watching... It's to bad too, because even though I oppose everything Sanders stands for politically, I was under the impression the man was more of a straight shooter, rather than a typical leftist that mischaracterizes the views and beliefs of the right in order to legitimise their candidacy.

My bad. I was unaware that you were one of these folks who throw around labels they really know the meaning of. Carry on.

Uh, that would be you. Nice try though.

No comment on CPUSA and CPC being named as it's "allies in congress"?

I would just point out to Bernie that abortion, contraception and gay sex are not the most conducive habits to building a family.

Re: Bernie Sanders lays out REAL family values platform

Hell I'm on the Bernie bandwagon and I am Canadian! The points he brings up are no-brainers to me. I just learned a few months ago that the US does not have a national parental leave time law and I couldn't believe it. Here in Canada, we get one year.

And the majority of Americans agree with Sanders quite populist message.

Re: Bernie Sanders lays out REAL family values platform

Polling at this point is far less about platform than it is a name recognition popularity contest. This will change as he keeps gathering these large crowds... provided the media stop ignoring him so much to address the urgent stories of how Rick Perry sneezed today or Hillary bought a new pant suit.
I get it. I know people that are already "all in" for Hillary. Ive asked why in the past but I have stopped. "Deer in the headlights" is not a very becoming fashion statement on people.

Re: Bernie Sanders lays out REAL family values platform

The only candidate so far who is addressing real issues and offering real solutions is Bernie Sanders. God, the guy is a breath of fresh air. Who doesn't support the family values Sanders is talking about?

Every time I hear him talk I agree with him.

Go Bernie!

He's not offering up solutions at all.

He's offering up a bunch of rehashed progressive talking points.

No, the majority of Americans do not " agree " with his message

Re: Bernie Sanders lays out REAL family values platform

I beg to differ.
Beg to differ all you want, but he knows something you apparently haven't thought about. After running in the primaries and losing as a Democrat, he wouldn't be registered in enough, if any at all, states to win the generall election as an independent. Ross Perot ran as an independent from the beginning to the end.

Does that help business grow the economy?

His candidacy is legitimate, and some parts of his platform have overwhelming Republican support.

Re: Bernie Sanders lays out REAL family values platform

Those aren't family values. They are government regulation of business.

Re: Bernie Sanders lays out REAL family values platform

Care to flesh that out and explain what you are trying to say?

Yes, he does.

Sanders is trotting out typical Democratic talking points. I'm disappointed in him. He's better than this.

So lie and call yourself a Democrat so you can fool Democrats into voting for you thinking you're a Democrat, in other words.

Bernie would have a better chance if he stayed an Independent. By calling himself a "Democrat" he's now pandering for votes, kissing up to the party leaders, and trying to be something he claims he's not.

Bernie is not lying, he caucuses with the Democrats, but since he feels the Democrats have lost their way he chooses not to be a registered Democrat.

Bernie is in this race to force the Democrat presidential contenders to discuss the issues he wants them to talk about. If he was an independant he would not be in the Democratic debates and would not be able to do it.

He knows damned well he has no chance of winning.

Re: Bernie Sanders lays out REAL family values platform

Where I work, both men and women can take parental and both take equally long leaves. The sex discrimination concern seems like a red herring.
