Right out of the gate Sanders dishonestly frames the beliefs of Republicans:
"When my Republicans colleagues talk about family values, what they are talking about is oppsition to a woman's right to choose, opposition to contraception, opposition to gay rights."
Let me address them one at a time.
1. Oppsition to a woman's right to choose - Republican's aren't trying to prevent women from making choices, many simply believe that abortion is the killing of an unborn child, a human being growing in the womb. This is not about denying rights to women, it's about protecting the rights of a child to be born, grow and have the same opportunity to live their lives as we all have. Most Republicans are "pro-life" or "anti-abortion", and are not for the suppression of woman's rights as the characteization by Sanders implies.
2. Opposition to contraception - The over whelming majority of Republicans do not advocate banning, or criminalizing the use of contraceptives. They are not pushing legislation to make contaceptives illegal in the US. Many may oppose their use personally, and in some cases by others based on religious beliefs, but there is no movement of any significance I've heard of to prevent their purchase or use. Many republicans, including myself, are opposed to schools handing out contraceptives to children without their parents permission, and opposed to the government using public, tax payer funds to provide them free of charge to people. Personal opposition to contraceptives, whether it be for religious, moral or financial reasons, does not equate to an effort to deny people access to them as Sanders implies.
3. Opposition to gay rights - This isn't about suppressing the human rights of homosexuals, or treating them as second class human beings, it's about the issue of same sex marriage... or should I say the changing of the definition of marriage. That's really all this comes down to. Many people on both sides of the isle believe that marriage is defined as the joining of a man and a woman, therefore are opposed to same sex "marriages". Most however (with the exception of the hard-core religious sect) are not opposed to civil unions. Even president Bush, a religious man himself, publically stated that he did not oppose, nor would stand in the way of any state that adopted laws allowing civil unions for same sex couples. While there are many people in America, democrat and republican alike, who believe homosexuality is morally wrong, their is no active movement to criminalize homosexuality, or any support for the discriminatory treatment of gays and lesbians. Disagreeing with certain lifestyles is a persons right, but such disagreement does not equate to mistreating, discriminating against, or denying rights to gay and lesbian people as Sanders implies.
I hit the play button intending to watch the video from start to finish, but after listening to the first 26 seconds it became clear that his speech was going to be nothing more than a political pep rally designed to fire up his far left base, so there was no need to continue watching... It's to bad too, because even though I oppose everything Sanders stands for politically, I was under the impression the man was more of a straight shooter, rather than a typical leftist that mischaracterizes the views and beliefs of the right in order to legitimise their candidacy.
