We know that solitary confinement can have lasting and debilitating effects on those who endure it. Teens are mentally vulnerable as they're minds aren't yet fully developed. We also know PTSD often lasts years - median 3-5 years, often far longer.

Of course we don't KNOW anything - maybe his mental issues are unrelated. It's not unusual for serious mental problems to first manifest around that age. But I don't see it as anything like "strained at best" to conclude that his time in jail and especially two years in solitary is the most likely primary cause of his mental problems, his suicide attempt in solitary, his multiple attempts after he was released and his eventual death.
None of us knows very much, including what Browder's life was like before his incarceration. Perhaps he manifested mental problems, but his family thought he was just being an angsty teen. We don't know.

But don't be too quick to connect his incarceration necessarily to his subsequent mental problems unless you know (I surely don't) that there is a strong link between incarceration in solitary confinement and later psychosis. There probably is, but we don't even know what meds he was taking. The WaPo article I linked in post #190 asked, "Was it the anti-psychotic medication that exacerbated his suicidal ideation? Or had he stopped taking the drugs?"

Without answers to these questions, there is no way to come to any fair conclusion.

We actually do know that solitary confinement causes severe mental problems. I won't bother citing articles, but if you're interested this search brings up many: "mental harm caused by solitary confinement" There is even a specific set of symptoms and a name for the disorder.

And I think we're splitting hairs. Of course there COULD be other factors. But the evidence we know is pretty clear and points in one direction. He was young, confined for long periods in solitary, as far as we know first attempted suicide in jail in solitary, tried many times in the period after his release, until he finally succeeded. And there is simply NO evidence of severe mental health issues before he was incarcerated.

But, of course, we don't have access to his medical records. Anything is possible. What seems likely and fits the facts as we know them with no significant exceptions is the detention and solitary confinement inflicted great harm, as we KNOW it does to other prisoners in those conditions.

From a Texans point of view I have to say it's nice to see the absolute stunning hypocrisy of "Ultra Progressive NYC" on issues of crime and race. NYC people slam Texas and other states yet black American teenagers are being tortured to death in NYC prisons for stealing some rich New Yorkers backpack while NYC people lecture the rest of us on values while they sit there sipping their $15 cup of designer coffee.

I couldn't find pictures of famous NYer's facepalming, so I found some fictional ones:

Well, we know people in NYC probably aren't self conscious enough to criticize the whole judicial system in the US. I'm sure they're going out of their way to"slam" Texas and Texas alone. Also, he didn't steal a rich New Yorker's backpack. That's pretty silly and just shows how little you know about this issue. Keep trying though, maybe one day you'll hit the nail on the head.
I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality. - MLK

If I was him I'd had been called for all the lawyers in the state to handle my problems. American justice system has deep holes of course but you may rely on yourself only in this country. Especially if you're in jail, huh.
