What do you think about reducing low level felonies such as drug abusing and shoplifting? Personally I don't like that idea since I don't want to see stoners on every corner. I can't support the idea of legalizing marijuana and other 'soft' drugs as weed smokers can't perceive reality in a proper way. I think that drug laws should be more strict and instead of that I'm seeing a completely opposite thing.

I'm sorry you're disappointed with such progress.

wtf makes you "think" that you have ANY right to interfere with what any other adult puts into (or takes out of) their own body, eh?

Like the article said, "History shows we cannot incarcerate our way out of this public health crisis..."

I think there is something definitely gone wrong in criminal code, justice and enforcement of civil peace. But I do not know that the major driving force to this is too severe penalties. Maybe. But i do not see it off hand.

Criminalizing marijuana to begin with while the demonstrably far more dangerous alcohol is legal, is quite severe.

I agree. I also think that such inconsistencies are a partial reason for the general problems.

Are there any scientific proofs that alcohol is more dangerous than marijuana? As far as I know it may cause schizophrenia and panic attacks. It's not researched well enough yet to make such statements.

Let's just look at one way that pot is less dangerous than alcohol then. One that we have plenty of data on. Death by overdose.

An average of six people die every day of alcohol poisoning, and most are not binge-drinking college students, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Tuesday.

In fact, according to the report, 76 percent of them are aged 35 to 64, and three of every four are men. Their deaths are largely tied to binge-drinking, with those episodes averaging a staggering eight drinks per binge. That level of consumption soaks drinkers' brains in enough alcohol to affect mechanisms that control breathing, heart rate and body temperature, and sometimes causes death, the report found.

How many deaths from marijuana overdose? Zero.

"Tetrahydrocannabinol is a very safe drug. Laboratory animals (rats, mice, dogs, monkeys) can tolerate doses of up to 1,000 mg/kg (milligrams per kilogram). This would be equivalent to a 70 kg person swallowing 70 grams of the drug—about 5,000 times more than is required to produce a high. Despite the widespread illicit use of cannabis there are very few if any instances of people dying from an overdose.

You are thinking in black in white ideology. You can decriminalize pot and still have it restricted with fines. It's not just an all or nothing deal. Then they are at least not filling the prisons for no reason.

That's probably a fair point if we're talking strictly within moderation, otherwise, all bets are off.

Should I ever get locked up, the first thing I'd do once they release me is to grab a bottle of vodka and some herb.

Would you include wallet in that statement? Just asking.

Instead of jail for some offenders, lets go back to public flogging. Put shoplifters in stocks in public places, or better yet, cut off one of their hands. Go back to public hangings, etc. If current punishments are not enough to deter crime, then up the punishments.

Their actions after doing so, cost to the public for them doing so and actions they take to fund their habits. Take away welfare from drug users, take away healthcare (unless they have private insurance) and add extra time/punishments for crimes committed to support drug habits, then I would accept it. I lived in Germany for a little over 3 years next to the Dutch border, **** that ****.
