U.S. Soldier Who Killed 16 Afghans: 'I Became Callous To Them Even Being Human'

"I planted war and hate for the better part of 10 years and harvested violence," he added. "After being in prison two years, I understand that what I thought was normal was the farthest thing from being normal."

Reminds me of Chris Kyle and Eastwoods' "American Sniper", the movie shocked me so deeply.
A man who kills whom he thinks is an enemy is guided by God, some say.
It seems to be a good thing from the start and in terms of fighting spirit of an Army it is the best but what comes next?

I have too many examples of a peaceful life to stop existing for a man who returned from a campaign.

What is a Sacrifice for democracy?

Sounds like a weak man.

Do you honestly believe the afghani invasion was a way to spread democracy?

Even if it was, what gives us the right to kill anyone in our perceived ideal political structure?

I doubt his not questioning authority was the problem.

Just so we are clear, that soldier killed those people in violation of military law. Now he's just trying to shift blame for his sociopathic nature to the military. Tens of thousands of soldiers did their job and were exposed to the same sorts of things he was without violating the law and killing innocent people. He's an aberration.

To paraphrase Kipling, rough men stand ready to do violence on our behalf so that we can freely post our drivel to this board. Perhaps some day they will decide we are not worth it.

For telling the truth.... This guy needs an extra taco on taco Tuesday nights. As for leniency in his sentence? NO. Im sure over time he will come to appreciate the extra taco when he is in prison for life. The truth of dehuminization needs to get out to the public. But the public also needs to know that crap like this is inexcusable. So give him an extra taco on taco night.

that's fine with me. I'm not worth it. Come on home, all of you. soldiers and sailors. build a double fence on our mex border. man the rifle towers every 1/4 mile of it, 24-7, and find and kick out the invaders who are already HERE. Stop worrying about some "maybe someday " enemy when you are not dealing with the "right here, right NOW " enemy.

Of course not.

Idiot award goes to Winston Parker, for thinking that a guy who casually strolls into a village and blows away more than a dozen innocent people is similar to a sniper who defends others by killing combatants.

I doubt his not questioning authority was the problem.

False. He is in prison for murdering Afghan civilians. It seems clear that his disregard for authority was his problem.

I thought, that was what I had said. But never mind.

In bayonet training, the drill instructor used to yell, "what is the spirit of the bayonet." We were supposed to yell, "to kill". I always thought that was a little foolish but in an all volunteer army there are some things you are expected to do. If the young man couldn't handle it, he should have chosen option B.

"My mind was consumed by war," Bales wrote late last year.
Then he must be justified!
Chris Kyle is being presented everywhere as a hero including the notorious movie, Robert Bales is being presented as a psycho. Great success.

YEAH@!!1!!11!

Why kill brown men over seas when you can do it right here at home! amirite?

Awww poor baby, it's almost like he was the one being murdered - my reaction to thread title and article. He doesn't seem to understand the people he killed don't get to appeal their fate

should've been screened out long before his 4th tour. Then again, should operations should never have continued there long enough to allow for 4 freaking tours

There is no such thing as a right to kill - except in Islam. We do it in an attempt to defeat an enemy.

Old Testament = Eye for an eye as well... Don't be so quick to just submit that only Islam grants a right to kill every culture has substantial subjective differences on who or what is entitled to kill and who or what isn't. For instance, we might view abortion as a legal right to women, which I do not, meanwhile orthodox Islam might view it as murder.

We think we are desensitized from violence by the sanitized version shown on TV, video games, and even our own imagination. I seriously doubt that's true. One need only ask a soldier after the battle is done (for him) or the cop who's killed or the driver whose actions have cost lives or the person who has taken a life in self-defense.

One of my CCW instructors ate his way out of the torment he felt by gaining 200 pounds. His body count is 61 with his service weapon and countless with his bombing raids. It is the one-on-ones that haunt him most. He says he can remember each of them. The pop-pop-pop, the smell of gunpowder, the blaze of the muzzle...everything switching to slow motion as if it were a movie reel...the recoil...the blood...the life preparing to leave his enemy...and, finally, the 'off switch' being set.

Tom has told me sketchy details of his best buddy's Vietnam Nam tour. A marine, he was constant point man on missions -- because he trusted no one else for the job. He was a ruthless killing machine after a while. No details here. He fought not so much for his country as he fought for the men at his side. He is a changed man, needless to say. Never married or had kids. But a very nice man to the peaceful world. He, though, doesn't think so.

We are hard wired to find killing each other abhorrent. Anyone who thinks they can kill another human being and simply chalk it up to "It was either him or me," has watched too many cop shows.

As to "what price Democracy," my answer would still be "Whatever it takes."

Neither judaism or christianity claim a right to kill.

Ummm what is eye for an eye, and have you ever heard of the inquisition or the witch trials?

Have you noticed that those things don't happen any longer in any religion other than Islam? You may be talking about old history but I'm talking about today.

Ummm what is eye for an eye

And if you kept reading...

Matthew 5:38-42 "38“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’h 39But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. 40And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you."

Seems that clarifies the point.

and have you ever heard of the inquisition or the witch trials?

You are conflating the actions of man with the teachings of Jesus. Someone can go on a shooting spree in a movie theater but that doesn't mean the law condones it.

What about Christian identity who reserve the right to kill homosexuals and people who aren't white Protestants or Talmudic zionists who believe in the ability to kill non Jewish goyim because they aren't real people, but rather cattle?

Remember the holocaust was a reality of our grandfathers, every single religion has an extremist sect to it no matter what the religion is. The problem is, that due to our invasion / occupation in places like Iraq Afghanistan, Iran, Egypt, Syria, libya etc. we increase the extremism of "anti infidel" belief.

A majority of Islamic people don't believe in killing Christians or Jews, only a few. Just like a majority of Christians and Jews don't believe in killing Islamic people or each other but certain sects do

Seriously what the hell is your point here. Old Testament clearly states god gave people the right to kill homosexuals and extract revenge in an equal manner, thus you kill my brother I can kill you...

Please I don't need bible verses to try to disprove the point that Christianity has killed more people probably then anything else in the history of the world besides disease

The old Testament is not Christian, there were no Christians before the birth of Christ. If you want to know what laws CHRISTIANS are meant to follow you read the New Testament, which the book of Matthew is apart of.

Actually, don't bother, you are absurdly wrong. The ideology with the highest body count by far in human history is Communism.

Communism has a body count in the hundreds of millions, the inquisitions killed about 2500 people over the course of 500 years, the Salem witch trials executed 19 people.
