Russia is naturally going to protect its adjacent areas, just as humans have done for a long time. Why freak out over it?
Take up Putin's challenge Radcen--generate a world map showing US bases and military presence and military operations, and then generate one showing Russian bases, military presence and military operations. Compare and contrast, if you dare.
Russia has done these things. Naturally, there can be no attempt at a meaningful Ukraine ceasefire (Minsk II) without including the aggressor state (Russia).

The other government reacts to threats from outside, does not conduct drone strikes and has not invaded countries under fraud.
Yet you see the former as some sort of justified and good effect.
Maybe Putin should ask himself why his neighbours find NATO membership so appealing.
