Americans Continue to Shift Left on Key Moral Issues - GALLUP

Go vote for the democrats if you don't like the Republican platform

And if the Republicans want to maintain power, they'll have to shift their platform in order to keep these people from voting for democrats.

For those too young to know I lived in times where blacks could not drink from the same water fountain as me and there were signs posted above the water fountains declaring this. We went on vacations and "WHITES ONLY" were on gas station washrooms everywhere. Everyone littered and litter sometimes was every where. picnic areas were often pig sties of litter.
Times change and will continue to change as long as there is time. When I am with a black man my age at work or home and we see young people of all races just doing anything we share a moment knowing this was not possible when we were young.

It was democrats who did segregation in the south.

Republicans got rid of slavery and segregation

So being socially liberal makes one "ignorant"? That's laughable. I find the opposite to be true -- it's the social conservatives who claim that, say, gay marriage is sending us to hell in a handcart when there is zero evidence it affects anyone not getting gay married in any way.

Of course you do, do you really expect YOU would think of your own views as ignorant?

The OP is just confirming that many old people have outdated values and as they die off, their outdated values die off with them.

I go to a huge high school in a southern state and even my most conservative friends identify as socially liberal. I often hear the phrase "I'm fiscally conservative and socially liberal so I'm a libertarian". Despite them not know what a libertarian is, they line up on the left socially. The republicans need to change their stance on gay marriage and fast because they will lose a large portion of the young vote.

History has shown that any politician that relies upon the young vote to gain election is a candidate that is certain to lose.

No, they won't. The people you reference, the young, historically don't exercise their vote. Even when you make it popular and cool to Rock the Vote, they just fail to show up.

Except they don't. The eldest generation isn't the largest voting block. It's those in the generation right after the eldest, the parents and new grandparents. And as history has shown, the young adopt the attitudes of grandparents and parents when they take the helm.

I was born in 51 and I can tell you that wasn't true for most states, mostly it was going on in the Southern states. The coasts were largely integrated. My father worked right alongside two black deputies and our town was small. Not a whole lot of black people in our small, lumber centered mountain town, but they worked and ate right along side everyone else.

Morality has gone the way of chivalry, personal accountability, parenting, and knowing who your daddy is.

So yeah, this is true.

I don't vote for either side of the Republocrats, all of you are the same. But I was just telling you a fact. Either evolve or die.

Not surprising, and not something that really bothers me.

Two interesting things that jumped out to me that don't really fit some of the connecting narritives to this...

Abortion is still under 50%. And the only "liberal" moral notion that actually seemed to DECREASE was wearing fur. More people find that to be morally acceptable now (though only 1%) than before. It's the only "liberal" notion that actually went away from the liberal direction on it.

I also feel like this is...somewhat...missing the point on some of these.

To me, some of them aren't necessarily "moral" or "immoral" choices. I don't find divorce "immoral". I don't find having a child outside of wedlock as "immoral". At the same time, I see these as things society as a whole should essentially discourage and urge people to make choices NOT to run into a situation where it is needed. To me there is a difference between saying something is "immoral" and saying something is generally a "negative" thing.

Divorce, as a concept, is negative for example. It's something that, as a society, we should strive not to have in a hypothetical world. Not because people are trapped in unhappy marriages, but rather because people should be in happy ones. Now naturally, that's impossible to achieve, and thus I divorce is necessary and I don't feel like it's "immoral" to get one. But in a general sense, you'd like to see less than more of this.

I'm happy to see doctor assisted suicide over 50%.

Definitely interesting to see how things continue to progress, especially politically as you get new crops of people coming off age. I said in another thread, I still think there's room for social conservatism within politics in the next decade, but the direction, method, and message needs to change. It needs to become a notion that's less about policies and more about perception and personal responsability.

Perhaps the shift of these things from being subjects of morality to now just being 'negative' things, is as indicative of the shift as the percentages themselves. There is no doubt that lots of these things used to be called immoral, even if they aren't now.

When people are struggling to survive, they probably care less about the affairs of others. The pornography number seems low unless it is like "Yes porn is wrong, but hurry up with this poll so I can get back to jerking off to the internet. I am such a bad, bad person. Somebody should spank me"

Read the news lately?

Do tell us all. Whats the best years to live and how is it those years are better than living now.

I await your answer.

strawman much? this proves how correct the statement is.

Straw man? Naw... It was your claim that the longer something is around the more intelligent it must be. Do you stand by that or not?

Cool anecdote. I recall the 70's and people just willy nilly throwing all their trash out of their car windows. Everyone was a ****ing smoker who ALWAYS opened their car door and just dumped their huge overflowing ashtrays right there in the parking lot. Cigarette butts and pop tops were everywhere.

Well the way its looking is Hilary will be holding the door for you to leave if you wish.

A politician may gain momentum with a youth movement but history shows that that pol best be ready for when they abandon him/her after the election is over.

Just wait till there is a voting ap tied into facebook or iphone. ****s gonna get real.

Hah the elite would never let that happen. The people would actually have influence then instead of a few hundred rich people.

That's truly wonderful!!

Of course you do, do you really expect YOU would think of your own views as ignorant?

What's "ignorant" about supporting SSM? What's "ignorant" about being OK with sex between two unmarried people? What's "ignorant" about supporting reproductive freedom? What's "ignorant" about supporting or not supporting the death penalty? Tell me, clownboy. Take me down that rabbit hole.

The one that surprises me a bit is divorce - only 20% see it as morally wrong. I'd have figured more like 50-50 split. Also, pretty shocked a majority think doctor assisted suicide is morally OK.

to me the divorce issue breaks down like this: if you are in an unhappy marriage that is causing pain for both you and your partner, as well as your loved ones, and you see no hope of reconciliation, is it more moral to split up and start over, or to try to stay together at the cost of your and your loved ones' happiness?

This must be making the far right go nuts.
Im conservative...I'm sure many would say 'far right'..and this doesnt drive me nuts at all. I have eyes...I can see. This has been going on for a while. Hell...its expected. It doesnt bother me in the least because I am not out in the world trying to coerce or force anyone to my way of thinking or to my belief system.

The difference is...the 'far left' sees this as 'progress'. I think society is devolving...becoming more corrupt daily. But thats OK. Live...love...be happy. I dont have to influence your world...I only have to influence mine.
