O'Malley jumps into presidential race, offers progressive alternative to Clinton

On the road, O'Malley touts a string of progressive actions he oversaw as governor of Maryland. Under his leadership, the state tightened gun laws, implemented a progressive tax code and legalized same-sex marriage. He also expanded the state's health care rolls, championed Obamacare and signed a bill raising the state's minimum wage to $10.10 an hour.

Yet O'Malley found himself defending that Maryland record recently when riots broke out in Baltimore over the death of a 25-year-old African-American man under police custody.
The treatment of Freddie Gray, which sparked a national dialogue about police conduct toward racial minorities, drew renewed scrutiny to the controversial zero-tolerance policing strategy that O'Malley advocated for as mayor -- part of an aggressive strategy to crack down on crime.

In an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper last month, O'Malley declared that Baltimore saw a "record reduction in violent crime" under his watch.
There are "probably now 1,000 mostly young, poor African-American men who did not die violent deaths in our city" because of these policies

I'm a fan. I'm from Baltimore and saw just how bad that city was before he became mayor - I left just as he was coming in.

More important though is his ideas of metrics - accountability and follow up -set goals, and make adjustments as needed to succeed.
That's unheard of in governing bureaucracies - usually it's just top down decrees, and hope some of it sinks down to mid management.

I am apolitical in terms of ideology. It doesn't matter to me so much which direction the county takes
as long as it's not business as usual - stumbling along unable to problem solve.

The VA fiasco is a good ex. of why some real down reach into the ABC agencies are needed.

Hillary is the same worn out tired: "throw money at it and hope it's fixed" mentality.
O'Malley offer not just generational change but a change in how government operates.

    LOL.
I can't get anything past you...this one is kina important to me, I want A.B.C. = Anybody But Hillary.

Plus I think O'Malley is just a new type of politician. There hasn't really been anyone since Harry Truman
who didn't completely pass the buck ( "The Buck Stops Here "- on Truman's Desk)..

At least it's something different......something old that could be something new again

How do you get that when he was a Bilbo Clinton Supporter? This came up with what we had.

O'Malley could soon be joined in the Democratic field by former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee, who plans to make an announcement next week, and former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb, who is exploring a potential campaign.

O'Malley has presented himself to voters as a next-generation figure in the party, pointing to his record as governor on issues such as gay marriage, immigration, economic issues and the death penalty.

O'Malley was known for his tough-on-crime, "zero tolerance" policies that led to large numbers of arrests for minor offenses. Critics say it sowed distrust between police and the black community. Supporters note the overall decrease in violent crime during his tenure. O'Malley has defended his work to curb crime, saying he helped address rampant violence and drug abuse.....snip~

i guess i'd like to know specifics about what he'd do to help the average worker. also, where is he at on bringing home the troops and prioritizing a domestic agenda? how about sending our kids to college without bankrupting them? i would really like to see a platform. if he could run to Hillary's left as an electable Sanders, i might be interested. until then, Sanders is the only candidate that i believe actually gives even a tiny **** about me and the issues that i care about.

Is he going to do the same thing that Barack did to Hillary in 2008? Poor Hillary.

Re: O'Malley jumps into presidential race, offers progressive alternative to Clinton

"Recently, the CEO of Goldman Saches let his employees know that he'd be just fine with either Bush or Clinton. I bet he would," O'Malley said. "Well, I've got news for the bullies of Wall Street: The presidency is not a crown to be passed back and forth by you between two royal families. It is a sacred trust to be earned from the people of the United States, and exercised on behalf of the people of the United States."

Wow....Attacking Big banks and ignoring the real " criminals " ? That's so original coming from a Democrat.

The hard truth of our shared reality is this: Unemployment in many American cities and in many small towns across the United States is higher now than it was eight years ago. Conditions of extreme and growing poverty create conditions for extreme violence. We have work to do.”

Lol.....I bet his plan is going to have something to do with " stimulus to increase aggregate demand" and THIS

" He said he thinks the country should broaden its view of which workers qualify for overtime pay and make it easier for workers to unionize and bargain for better wages.

He pointed to paid leave and affordable childcare as key to improving the economy, and said he believes it is an economic imperative to create a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. "

As Governor, he increased sales taxes, income taxes on high-income earners and created new taxes on services. He also raised the gas tax for the first time in more than two decades and increased the corporate tax rate. Don't let this guy anywhere near the White House.

I doubt it. Obama came in day one as a strong challenge to Hilary. These guys aren't really going to make a dent. My guess is they might be getting their name out there for the next time around (like a lot of the Repubs).
