China threatens nuclear war with U.S.

There is nothing new here. If you are more than 20 years old, you will remember that some similar issue pops up with regards to China about once per decade. China has shot down Anerican planes before. This will blow over.

Also, the idea that there are "new kids on the block" is one I disagree with. Russia is hardly a "new kid." We had a Cold War for decades, they were the world's other superpower.

Rather than being a country on the rise, Russia lost the Cold War, and they are substantially weaker today than they were 20 years ago. You think that defying the West on Ukraine makes them strong....just think that 20 years ago Ukraine was a part of the Soviet Union and if Russia wanted to march tanks around Kiev, the West would have said nothing.

The situation in Ukraine, therefore, only shows how weak Russia currently is. In the past, the USSR could influence far away countries like Venezuela, Cuba, and Chile. Today, they can barely influence Ukraine...located in their back yard and once a part of their own country.

As far as China is concerned, China depends on the West, especially the USA, to buy the stuff they manufacture. If China goes to war with the U.S., all we have to do is halt any imports from China and the Chinese economy is finished.

The cooperation between the USA and China is the most important bilateral relationship in the world, both sides know that. Neither side will allow this to escalate. This is simply another scare, as happens every so often with China.

I’m 60. I can’t think of any American planes China shot down since Vietnam.
The ‘new kid on the block’ is a reference to a country now openly challenging the U.S.
The cold war ended decades ago, Russian military strength and technology is increasing, not decreasing, it’s why they’re able to challenge, just like China.
The Ukraine is a battleground of competing dominance. Russia, v the European Union and the U.S. The EU and the U.S. were out manoeuvred by Russia and sent packing. That hurt and the response is sanctions and moving NATO closer to its borders. Russia is still there, the EU and the U.S. are not. The world is changing, it’s just something to get used to.

Openly challenging the U.S. is not a new thing though. Heck, the Cubans have been openly challenging the U.S. for decades, are they a superpower?

The Iranians have been.

The Russians have never really stopped openly challenging the US. Their stature in the world is diminished...we already defeated them in the Cold War, however many in Russia are unhappy about that and wish to regain their old glory. Regardless, Ukraine shows how weak Russia really is. 20 years ago, Ukraine was a part of the USSR, and Russia's influence in Ukraine was unquestioned or unchallenged.

Today, Ukraine may become an EU and NATO member. The Western powers are asserting their dominance in Russia's backyard, and Russia is clawing and scratching to try to stop it.

Russia has no money. Russia has no military. Russia has no cultural influence in the world. They are not on the rise, they are in a steep decline.

The Russians are trying to cling to the leg of the Chinese, who actually are on the rise. Hopefully the Chinese don't make a stupid mistake and foresake a relationship with the USA for Russia.

Challenging America dominance militarily face to face is a new thing. Boasts from countries like Iran and North Korea are bluff, arguably with advances in technology, Russia and China aren’t bluffs.

No one defeated Russia militarily, the cold war ended because Russia collapsed of its own accord. It could well have gone the other way with a pressing of the button. Of course Russia is upset about it; the humiliation was the same as the Americans felt in Vietnam.

The Russians are not ‘clawing and scratching’, they drew red lines and sent the EU and the U.S oil/gas pipeline sniffers packing. There is no western dominance there, they’ve gone and are now stamping their feet from a safe distance.

Russia has no money or military power? You are joking aren’t you? Yes, of course sanctions hurt, but it’s the American economy that is collapsing:

Russia is already doing deals with China; China has entered into a new agreement to buy Russian gas and oil, they’ve both abandoned the dollar, opened the New Development Bank (NDB) . . . and are now openly challenging American dominance within their own spheres of interest.

Conspiracy theory or fact? It could be either, but it’s all over the internet and I can’t find any official denials.
What frightened the USS Donald Cook so much in the Black Sea?
‘On 10 April 2014, the USS Donald Cook entered the waters of the Black Sea and on 12 April a Russian Su-24 tactical bomber flew over the vessel triggering an incident that, according to several media reports, completely demoralized its crew, so much so that the Pentagon issued a protest.’

China needs us more than we need them.

In the short run, yeah retail would be affected (including Walmart). In the long run? There's nothing China can do that can't be done just as well and just as inexpensively in India, Vietnam, or Indonesia.

On the other hand, what would be China's long term plan if their best customer took their business elsewhere? They can't just find another USA or Western Europe to sell their stuff to.

It's amazing the scale on which both the Russians and Chinese have doubled down on their focus of military growth. Both nations began, about the time of our latest military adventurism in the Middle East, to sharply increase their military budgets, modernizing their militaries. They both have pushed back on our Middle East policies and they both are forging alliances that are a direct result of USFP. They also both have criticized the US dominated uni-polar world, pointing out that it is a threat to global security and that they aim to push back on it. It's dangerous to dismiss the possibilities of hostilities with these two nations.

In my view, as long as America retains conventional weapons and non-nuclear superiority, it will always rule the seas and the airways. Just as Russia throughout the cold war often threatened nuclear war but never acted, China will as well. China sees, as many do, a weak President in Washington and is taking that opportunity to flex its muscles, as Russia has done in the Ukraine. Should America, with Japan and other allies, stand up to China in the South China seas, China will look for a way to save face and retreat.

china nor russia is dumb enough to use nuclear war as it is predicted to have no winners, and everyone losers so long as the mad doctrine is in effect, meaning the only way to win a nuclear war is to fight a non nuclear country.that too may backfire as lets say nuking iran may cause russia to retalliate with nukes due to it being so close to russia, causing it fear.

the country to fear is south korea,as it does not seem to fear the effects of the mad doctrine, and it is a starving nation with little to lose if their gamble fails.

Not new at all. You said you were 60 years old. Don't you know of all the proxy wars the USA and USSR fought during the cold War? Ever heard of Georgia? Or from the Chinese....you ever hear of Taiwan? China has been openly threatening war with the Usa over Taiwain since the PRC took over in China

Nothing new at all.

As for Ukraine, if Russia is so powerful then why have they not managed to take Ukraine? Kiev is still independent, and the main part of the country will go to the EU/NATO inevitably.

This would have been unthinkable 20 years ago. Russia has lost a great deal of power and influence.

Russia, a declining country, has nothing to lose from acting up. Their economy, their military, and their social influence are a fraction of what they were in the 80's.

China, on the other hand, are legitimately on the rise. They are also not stupid. They are wealthier today than they have been in hundreds of years...and the reason is they have trading partners in the west who buy a lot of their merchandise.

There is zero percent chance China damages their relationship with the West in order to get in bed with the declining, defeated Russians. That would be stupid in epic proportions. All the good things that have happened for China since the 70's would go away overnight. Nobody is that idiotic.

Sandwiched between the usual banal topics of gay marriage and Ferguson, is a U.S. threat to send ships and aircraft to the South China sea over the disputed islands. America claims that the dispute is about territorial rights in the sea itself and China says it’s about the islands themselves.

Do you, like me, get a feeling of a possible big catastrophe coming in the not too distant future?

China cautions U.S. Navy on patrols in South China Sea - CNNPolitics.com
‘Washington (CNN)—The U.S. is considering deploying aircraft and ships to contest Chinese claims to disputed islands in the South China Sea, U.S. officials said Wednesday.
Options are on the table to fly surveillance aircraft and sail Navy ships nearby in a move that puts the U.S. directly into a contentious territorial contest in East Asia, in which, until now, the U.S. has avoided overtly taking sides.’

Chinese State Paper Warns "War Will Be Inevitable" Unless U.S. Stops Meddling In Territorial Dispute | Zero Hedge
'A war between the United States and China is “inevitable” unless Washington stops demanding Beijing halt its construction projects in the South China Sea, a Chinese state-owned newspaper warns.
“If the United States’ bottom line is that China has to halt its activities, then a US-China war is inevitable in the South China Sea,” The Global Times, an influential newspaper owned by the ruling Communist Party’s official newspaper the People’s Daily, said in an editorial Monday.'

Will America back down? Possibly the idea will be shelved, or it might end in a stalemate. America will sail through the South China seas as it’s entitled to do but keeping well away from the islands and stick it’s tongue out and China will boast it didn’t intervene because it didn’t come near the islands. Face saved on both sides and everyone goes home happy.
The alternative is that America does intrude on the islands in which case China will react. The loss of face, which are often grounds for suicide in Asia, will force them to do so.

"The White House is determined to block the rise of the key nuclear-armed nations, Russia and China, neither of whom will join the "world’s acceptance of Washington’s hegemony," says head of the Institute for Political Economy, Paul Craig Roberts.
Dr Roberts believes that neither Russia, nor China will meanwhile accept the so-called "vassalage status accepted by the UK, Germany, France and the rest of Europe, Canada, Japan and Australia." According to the political analyst, the "price of world peace is the world’s acceptance of Washington’s hegemony."

I think what America increasingly has to accept is that there are two new kids on the block called Russia and China and both have threatened to use nuclear weapons. China is not in opposition to a U.S. military presence in places like Japan or South Korea, but like Putin with the Ukraine and now China with the islands dispute, both are increasingly drawing red lines of their own in their own backyards.

You can't change China Marts supplier overnight. But more importantly, why are we even talking about allowing things to escalate to such a serious crisis level with China, just to stop them from their activities on a group of tiny islands that have nothing on them?

I'm not. My point was pretty much that a war would be mutually retarded for both sides. If for no other reason, it would be economically destructive and neither the Anericans nor the Chinese are gonna be willing to go broke and poor in order to fight a war over something totally avoidable.

There is zero percent chance that this current incident leads to any war, let alone nuclear war.

Russia worries me more because they have less to lose. They're already broke and poor. They're pretty much giving away oil and gas for pennies on the dollar in an attempt to befriend the Chinese, because they have already isolated themselves from everyone else. Too bad for them, the Chinese aren't idiots. They'll take the free energy, smile and shake hands, and continue getting rich by selling goods to the West where the money is.

I understand you are frustrated by the fact that you haven't even read the things you've linked to, let alone understood what is written there. But hey, that's your problem, not mine.

All I had to read was the summary, which pointed out exactly what I said and what you denied: That the International Court of Justice has jurisdiction over territorial disputes and that it adjudicated a dispute between Indonesia and Malaysia regarding two islands in the Sulawesi Sea. That's the only purpose for the link and all I really care about. I mean, are you seriously claiming that this body does not have jurisdiction of disputes like this?

Well, it seems that China's not going to back off their activities in the SCS, so, unless the US backs off theirs, this most certainly can lead to a war.

Well yeah, that you don't know what constitutes China's title to the Spratly's..

And why is what I know or don't know about China's claim relevant to the fact that the Chinese don't appear eager to have the matter adjudicated?

I don't trust this link in the slightest: CRG maintains websites in several languages, including the English-language GlobalResearch.ca, which are critical of United States foreign policy and NATO as well as the official explanation of the September 11 attacks in 2001 and the war on terror. In a January 2012 article, he characterized the Free Syrian Army as "a de facto paramilitary creation of NATO."[9] Syrian president Bashar al-Assad e-mailed his father-in-law, Fawaz Akhras, to inquire how true Chossudovsky's claims were.[10] Chossudovsky claimed that deaths of protesters during the Euromaidan demonstrations in Ukraine were "triggered by Neo-Nazi elements", used "to break the legitimacy of a duly elected government."[11] He is a favoured commentator at Russia Today.[12] His opinion is regularly asked for by the Iranian government owned Press TV.[13] Chossudovsky was interviewed in the documentary film The Weight of Chains, which the Centre for Research on Globalisation amongst others sponsored.[14]
