Centrist George Pataki Tests Republican Waters With White House Bid

Three-term former New York Gov. George Pataki declared he is running for the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday, in a bid that will test the Republican electorate's interest in a centrist who led a heavily Democratic state.

This will test the capacity of the GOP clown car.

Does that thing have any capacity limit?

If the GOP were a functional political party, Pataki would be a formidable opponent.

How is it that the GOP can be so irresistible a force in congressional elections and yet a wash-out in presidential?

A centrist such as Pataki doesn't have a chance in the world in today's Republican party. He must be running for VP or a cabinet position.

He's here in NH this morning doing his first official campaign stop. I've met him and actually am quite intrigued. He isn't a social conservative. He's pro-SSM and even supports some gun control. He has an uphill climb here (he's said that he'll focus most of his attention in NH) but I think he's attention-worthy. He's slightly closer to my preferred Jon Huntsman than most who've declared.

In presidential elections all of the voters are voting for or against one person. Nationwide the USA's demographics don't favor the GOP.

I would think about voting for Pataki.

That's probably the main reason why he won't be the candidate.

I wish his campaign had more of a prayer. I think he is a worthy candidate and should be more highly regarded in the race than some of his 'top tier' opponents.

Probably not. However, when Hillary Clinton is being called a centrist and borderline DINO and Democratic Socialist Bernie Sanders becomes known as "a real liberal/progressive" Democrats don't have much room to talk about creeping radicalism.

Organization and demographic impulse to vote are largely to blame.

In the recent past, it was Democrats who had an incredibly poor campaign infrastructure. That slowly changed after Howard Dean first ran and kind of came to its peak with Obama's campaign strategies.

Over time a Party's ground game not only suffers from greater political forces, but also its inability to innovate.

Expect the ping pong match to continue, despite what liberals are saying about Electoral College inevitabilities.
