Really? You'd better tell that to the Brazilians and the Argentinians and Uruguayans who are all quite sure it's an American sport too.

I think that's because that's all the FBI has the authority to arrest. Let's see if the results of this investigation get shared with countries and if they follow suit.

Those that were arrested were of half-a-dozen different nationalities, all detained in Zürich and Miami, so it's not a question of authority or jurisdiction but of cooperation with other nations and their LE agencies.

When I said they were all American, I didn't mean they were all from the US. I meant American, as opposed to European or Asian.

FIFA Inquiry Yields Indictments; U.S. Officials Vow to Pursue More

United States law enforcement officials declared in forceful terms on Wednesday that their broad investigation of FIFA had only begun and pledged to rid the international soccer organization of systemic corruption.

The Justice Department, F.B.I. and I.R.S. described soccer’s governing body in terms normally reserved for Mafia families and drug cartels, saying that top officials treated FIFA business decisions as chits to be traded for personal wealth. One soccer official took in more than $10 million in bribes, Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch said.

The schemes involving the fraud included the selection of South Africa as the host of the 2010 World Cup; the 2011 FIFA presidential elections; and several sports-marketing deals.

Re: FIFA Inquiry Yields Indictments; U.S. Officials Vow to Pursue More

"The promise that the investigation would continue raised the specter of more arrests, but officials would not comment on whether they were investigating Sepp Blatter, the FIFA president and the man widely regarded as the most powerful person in sports. One federal law enforcement official said Mr. Blatter’s fate would “depend on where the investigation goes from here.”

It is a big deal and not a surprise in the slightest, people have been suspecting the FIFA of fraud and corruption for years now.

I dunno, they were in on the scam as well. The first growth of the game started in England

I don't think it's huge. It's unsurprising. I'm shocked that the 2010 selection of SA is under scrutiny. If there's any investigation that should be made it should be the selection of Qatar in 2022. Here' comes the conspiracy theorists claiming that this is Obama's revenge for Chicago not being selected in 3...2...1...

Read the article. The 2022 world cup IS under investigation.

They also proved that several previous selections, gold cups, etc were all corrupted. And they are investigating (and presumably building a legal case against) Sepp Blatter himself.
