Exclusive: China warns U.S. surveillance plane

Above the South China Sea (CNN)The Chinese navy issued warnings eight times as a U.S. surveillance plane on Wednesday swooped over islands that Beijing is using to extend its zone of influence. The series of man-made islands and the massive Chinese military build-up on them have alarmed the Pentagon, which is carrying out the surveillance flights in order to make clear the U.S. does not recognize China's territorial claims. The militarized islands have also alarmed America's regional allies.

A CNN team was given exclusive access to join in the surveillance flights over the contested waters, which the Pentagon allowed for the first time in order to raise awareness about the challenge posed by the islands and the growing U.S. response. CNN was aboard the P8-A Poseidon, America's most advanced surveillance and submarine-hunting aircraft, and quickly learned that the Chinese are themselves displeased by the U.S. pushback.

"This is the Chinese navy ... This is the Chinese navy ... Please go away ... to avoid misunderstanding," a voice in English crackled through the radio of the aircraft in which CNN was present.

The spratly islands are claimed by at least 5 nations, China is clearly committed exerting its influence in the region. IIRC there are large oil deposits nearby.

I also think they know Obama is a weak POTUS, and that this is the time to establish a presence in the region.

Obama's weak? Given Bush's reaction to Russia's takeover of Georgia, what exactly do you think Dubya and Warmonger-in-Chief Cheney would have done to stop China?

"US Conservative" is just ticked because Obama refuses to go back to the days of nuclear brinksmanship, and doesn't seem to understand that in the modern era, one nation doesn't need military hardware to ruin another nation's whole day.

As for myself, I am NOT willing to risk thousands of my shipmates (and billions of dollars in military hardware and a huge amount of our national prestige) just to fight over some mostly-uninhabited islands. Yes, there's some oil and gas. They can have it - the amount that is there is not a game-changer, and is not worth going to war over.

This has little to do with Obama, the Senkaku Islands dispute goes back to before WWII. Between China and Japan there is enough history and complication, but now we get to add in the Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Vietnam all claiming parts of these islands in a fight for more direct territory control over the South China Sea. China building military island control is no surprise.

Not worth killing or dying for.

The islands are in China's backyard and the claims by the Philipines, Japan, Malaysia, seem specious, so it is a wise strategic move for China. It is an area 8,000 miles away from the USA, so it is difficult to condone USA interference. Hegemony is expensive. Then there's that OIL and Exxon/Mobil, Chevron, Shell, BP and those many Big Energy campaign contributors on K Street. Just building a new Media boogie man for the next "War" campaign. You know. like the Drug War, Terror War, Iran bin Boogieman, Syria VonHitler, Libya Komrade Qaddafi, etc., to gin up the potential markets for war materials, and war profits, and "War is good business. and business is good," in a Nation that has profitted handsomely form War for most of its' existence, and that would be the USA where "War is good business."

So, why not send up a few drones to take pictures? Let the Chinese shoot one down, we'll send up another and deny that they shot one down and that they're even there.

At least on opportunity has presented itself for the RW to once again blame Obama, the "weak president." Some good came out of the incident, didn't it?

If Obama is weak why don't the Chinese take the next step after warning the pilots? I think that you are confusing weakness to a game of poker.

You don't just stop China. Gotta think that one thru and gotta really want it.

Pretty good analogy, even if poker is only played for fun. Anyway, easy for a commander in chief of the premier military power of the world to pull up with his bad ass army and tell Hussein to get the hell out or I'll kick your ass. I don't see Obama, Bush or Rubio doing the same thing to Xi Jinping. And as Glenn already pointed out, Bush didn't do that to Putin either.

The islands have always been in those countries territorial waters, China did not care about most of them until oil was found there. The US is in the area by the request of those nations as they feel threatened by Chinese expansion and they have every right to be.

Well it's not worth a war with China (which won't look anything like a war with Iraq or Libya) just because there are neighboring countries that lay claim to disputed islands who have asked the US to defend their interests against China's interests as though their interests are somehow superior to China's. And why'd you quote Dave Fagan to say that, it's certainly not a response to what he was saying?

Well their interests are superior to China's as the islands are closer to the respective nations claiming them and those islands have always been considered parts of those nations. Have you ever actually looked at a map of the South China Sea? It would be like Cuba claiming the entirety of the Gulf of Mexico and Key West. China only started to claim the islands once oil was found around them.

Love the false dichotomy. So the options are let China do as it wishes, or nuclear war?

Reminds me of the lefts Iran and terrorism arguments.

Nothing is worth fighting for-so let them take it.

It does go back long before Obama-but I think China is emboldened by a POTUS who wont respond.

Its not exactly a secret that he's a push over.

Do some reading.

Its not in their backyard-its quite a ways south and much closer to other nations.
Spratly Islands dispute - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Note that China simply decided it was theirs after WW2 (despite other nations have a much longer presence). China does have the distinction of killing on the islands-they massacred Vietnamese fishermen there.

Im not responsible for the diminished outcomes of a weak potus.

Warning the pilots and building up a military presence IS the next step. One they are established you can count on them threatening to attack others.

If this is a game of poker-Obama thinks he's playing go fish.

I think China knows better to push the US too far. We are most of their economy and many American corporations are providing jobs for their people. They will not bite the hand that feeds them.

The islands are NOT in their territorial waters-territorial waters extend 12 miles from their land.

China arbitrarily DREW a line, and told everyone else it was theirs.

And now they are building up a military presence and telling others to pack up and bounce.

They don't even have a compelling case to the land.

That is what I am saying. By territorial waters I mean they have always been parts of their nations martime borders.

What do you think would happen if they pushed the US? Obama has already demonstrated that his red lines mean nothing. Putin was much more bold in his actions and what happened there?

If I was a territory nation, this would be an excellent time to dig in-and thats what China is doing. Long term, it also sets a precedent that having the US as an ally isn't particularly helpful.

I understand your position, just trying to illustrate that military tension over these islands is nothing new.

I doubt that us having a weaker President or a stronger President has all that much impact on China's decisions over the years for a continual increase in military readiness and showing of might over this area of the South China Sea. China has been running patrol boats in and out of these waters for decades now. Granted, things got much worse once Japan held a Chinese fishing boat Captain for several weeks back in 2010. The activity between the Chinese and Taiwanese governments goes way back as well. Once China fighters entered Japan's airspace in 2012 that pretty much signaled the end of a peaceful resolution between all these nations.

My point is, it would be foolish to blame the escalation on Obama even if there was additional increases in military activity during his time.

The other key issue is what is it you expect any President to do about this dispute? Strong rhetoric has a tendency to not really impact China decision making, nor has it really quelled their military and/or economic ambitions for this region. I think you overestimate the hand we have in our relations with China anyway. They have plenty of cards in their hand given that they buy our debt to the point that we rely on it, *and* they build a significant amount of our products to the point of enjoying a trade surplus with us.
