Isis seizes Palmyra Live updates as Unesco World Heritage site falls to Islamic State

It's going to be really unfortunate if they manage to destroy the archaeological site.

Isis have almost taken full control of the ancient town, according to Syrian activists. The Syrian Observatory for human rights reported on Wednesday that government forces collapsed in the face of Isis attacks and withdrew from the town late on Wednesday. It remains unclear how close to the archaeological site they have come.

From Syrian outlet: Official: Syrian Armed Forces Withdraw from Ancient City of Palmyra
"The Syrian Armed Forces (Syrian Arab Army’s 18th Tank Battalion and National Defense Forces) have officially withdrawn all of their soldiers from the ancient city of Palmyra (Tadmur) after a large-scale assault was launched by the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) for the second time in six days.

According to a military source, 16 National Defense Forces (NDF) and Syrian Arab Army (SAA) soldiers were killed-in-action (KIA) and another 68 were wounded during the fierce clashes for the Palmyra National Hospital, Palmyra Museum, Palmyra Military Airbase, Desert and Development Office, Badiyah Military Branch Office, and the northern suburbs of this ancient city in the east Homs Governorate of Syria."

The Syrian Arab Army and National Defense Forces are on the outside of the city. Wouldnt suprise me if they are regrouping for a counter attack.

This is a devastating blow. Unless I'm mistaken, the ruins are not far outside Palmyra, so ISIS likely has a clear path to reach them. Unfortunately, for ISIS, the destruction of peoples and their cultures is a deliberate strategy. Indeed, the destruction of cultural artifacts is almost certainly an element of ISIS's strategy for breaking peoples' wills to resist it. Unless this military situation is reversed quickly, I suspect that ISIS will level the archaeological site, probably within days.

In the broader context, the fall of Ramadi and now Palmyra suggest that ISIS remains on the offensive overall albeit with some setbacks e.g., its defeat at Tikrit.

With respect to the ancient site's being in imminent danger, Reuters reported, "Syria's antiquities chief called on the world to save its ancient monuments and state television said Islamic State fighters were trying to enter the city's historical sites."

When the National Museum was looted (10th - 12th April 2003) American troops stood by – whilst their colleagues diligently guarded the Oil Ministry.

As some of antiquity’s most sublime, wonders – fifteen thousand items – were looted, Donald Rumsfeld, demonstrably a cultural cretin, remarked: “stuff happens.”

The US military were given co-ordinates of all Iraq’s museums, monuments, archeological sites. “All of Iraq is an archeological treasure”, remarked an archeologist at the time. Yet the US troops led destruction’s way, creating a military base in Babylon (dating from c 2,300 BC) site of the Hanging Gardens. Ancient miracles were bulldozed to build a military helicopter landing pad. They did the same next to the believed birthplace of Abraham, near Ur’s great Ziggurat. Ur dates from 3,800 BC but is recorded in written history from 26th century BC. War crimes of enormity.

We went through similar in Iraq a dozen years ago when the Bush administration displayed an equal disregard for the antiquities.

Oh wow, blame bush derangement syndrome at it's most deluded indeed.
Climate, changes. It takes a particularly uneducated population to buy into the idea that it's their fault climate is changing and further political solutions can fix it.

I believe the topic of the OP relates to ISIS and Palmyra.
