Alarming Surge In Murders And Shootings In Baltimore « CBS Baltimore

A Baltimore police officer who chose to remain anonymous says the Freddie Gray case impacted policing.

“If you want them to be proactive in patrolling and trying to catch people, I could see them not being interested in doing that,” the officer said.

William Scipio heads Sandtown’s Resident Action Committee–an area once at the heart of April’s unrest.

Ileto: “When was the last time you’ve personally seen an officer in Sandtown?”

Scipio: “Since the riots.”

Why would a police officer even consider intervening in these parts of Baltimore anymore? Especially if he happens to be a white police officer.

I'm not following. So what's the deal now? Cops are sending operatives into the neighborhoods to kill people because they don't want to go there themselves?

Sounds more like cops don't want to patrol or fully enforce the law for a bunch of people who don't appreciate what they do. Since the police presence is down in these areas, some people are taking advantage and murdering each other.

Not sure that is really what the article is saying.

It appears that post the mess with death of Freddie Gray, Baltimore Police have become hesitant to do much about crime. Because of, crime has shot up. City leaders are ineffective and community leadership is as lost as they usually are. No matter what ignorant comment Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake comes up with on each passing day, it appears this case has impacted police activity.

Look at it this way, you have a mayor, city leadership, and community leadership that has ensured the local Police Department is bastardized in the media and placed under the Federal microscope, then they all have to turn around and find some support and morale for the same Police Department to patrol the streets. Not going to happen without issues.

If that's the case and the police are not going to do their jobs in certain areas because they either are not supported in doing so by their hierarchy and mayor, certain areas will become anarchistic (Think: Escape from NY but certainly not as stark). It's area's like that where gangs will setup shop if they haven't already. Given the current social progressive climate calling out "microaggressions" and people getting offended at using certain pronouns on college campus's to now any time a cop is involved where a suspect is injured there will be a lawsuit - I can see the police pulling back on patrols and interactions with certain portions of their city as a realistic reaction. Good luck with that Baltimore - your DA and mayor will get you "justice" whatever that means, and you're city now becomes Detroit not for economic reasons but because of a break down in law and order.

What I am hinting at is similar to what you are hinting at.

I can understand wanting a police department that is as objective, as fair, and as community oriented as possible. However, when as leaders you instill a mantra that the Police Department is suspect because of the actions of a few with it then it stands to reason that the community becomes adversarial to the principles of law and order. In that sense then Baltimore is on path to become the next Detroit, or Chicago where crime is rampant and Democratic leaders are clueless as to reverse course.

Then I guess I was confused.

It was my understanding that crime was happening in these neighborhoods because of the cops. What I was hearing was that the police presence and constant harassment was causing good people to go bad or, more accurately, was creating bad people out of whole cloth for the sole purpose of keeping the community impoverished.

Am I now to understand that there are bad people in that community who are not cops?

When police fear being prosecuted, beaten up like political pinata's they tend to avoid those situations. People don't like going into no win scenarios without just cause if they can avoid it.

It's likely that the Baltimore Police Department is simply following their Mayor's lead and letting the poor dears have an area of the city where they can take out their frustrations and be criminal and murderous without interference. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Perhaps the Mayor, and maybe the new head of the US Justice Department, can scour for volunteers to head up neighbourhood watch patrols in the community. After all, these are supposedly law abiding citizens who are being brutalized by police, so without police interference it should be easy to walk the streets and be free now.

I was shocked too. And here I thought that everyone was peacefully living a nice quiet life in Baltimore until the cops started forcing them to commit crimes so they could shoot them.

Words and actions have consequences. Crime is not an area where political correctness has any positive impact.
