Mohammed Morsi, ousted Egyptian president, sentenced to death - World - CBC News

An Egyptian court today sentenced ousted president Mohammed Morsi and more than 100 other people to death over a mass prison break during the 2011 uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak. As is customary in passing capital punishment, Judge Shaaban el-Shami referred his death sentence on Morsi and others to the nation's top Muslim theologian, or mufti, for his non-binding opinion. He set June 2 for the next hearing.

Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected president, was ousted by the military in July 2013 following days of mass street protests by Egyptians demanding that he be removed because of his divisive policies. Morsi's successor, Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, was the military chief at the time and led the ouster. El-Sissi ran for president last year and won the vote in a landslide. Morsi already is serving a 20-year sentence following his conviction on April 21 on charges linked to the killing of protesters outside a Cairo presidential palace in December 2012.

He's a religious nut. Yes he does.

Lol !!

Obama's choice to rule Egypt " ISS " now being sentenced to death ?

Funny I thought it was the Eygptians who voted.

"Muslim Brotherhood" Morsi had Obama in the palm of his hand.

Does he deserve death?

No, hell el-Sissi is worse then Morsi, but hey he's not "Muslim Brotherhood," so he'll get ignored as he does things like oh...keep journalist in max security prisons for reporting.

I am not a fin of military regimes (which the current one in Cairo is) and I also think that dragging your political opponents in court and sentencing them to death en masse is not the best way forward. That being said, the Morsi regime was very bad and worse for Egypt and the whole region than the current regime.

Morsi was hardly great, and from what it seems, just as interested in being a dictator as el-Sissi. I'll admit I'm unlikely to see el-Sissi as better without heavy doses of evidence though, due to my own heavy bias against el-Sissi because some of his actions. He likely, if not ordered it, supported the killing of hundreds of protesters, is cracking down hard on any dissenting media. Has courts that are trumping up charges, jailing journalists, and so forth.

Also have issues that people were so critical of the Muslim Brotherhood, yet seem silent when it is being done by el-Sissi. Not like the media isn't reporting on it, but outside of that you barely hear anything about it.

He was found guilty of, among other charges, torture and murder. Yes that warrants a death sentence in my opinion.

So all nutty religious people deserve death?

Let's see.

He advocated an ideology that openly wants all non-Muslims to pay a "fine" just to live their lives and he advocated the genocide of many non-muslim peoples.

Yeah. He deserves to die.

Yeah. He deserves to die.

Your original post justified his death for being a religious nut. I was asking if this was your default stance for all "religious nut"s.

He was elected so he needs to die. Global secularists need to make a point that you won't be a fundamentalist and rule a country. You will be put to death.

Yes it is, basically.

So really your way of dealing with the opposition is even harsher than this "religious nut".

Oh... Its an "It's Obamas fault" post. That didn't take long.

He isn't "opposition" as you claim. He's a fantasy (religion) cultist murderer and Egypt's government is correct in that Morsi is directly responsible for hundreds of deaths seeing as he openly advocated such.

He's a fanatical, primordial religious fanatic who was elected to in no uncertain terms "Cleanse" a great many people all over his fantasy religion. He's against human progress and is fully engaged in implementing his and others fantasy beliefs onto the greater world. He needs to be removed and those like him also need to be removed for the basic safety of all.

Well first, you have made a very clear and verbal distinction between "religious" and "secular" and said "basically yes" that "religious nuts" should be killed if they are elected to office.

Furthermore, you argue that the "religious nut" demanded that non-Muslims pay a fine as if tat is a valid contributing factor to wishing him dead.

And you wish to kill any religious "nut" who might be elected to office and you continually make it clear that the key to your deadly desire in more the religion than the nut.

I have no love for Morsi, but your ideology really isn't any different than his. You wish death to people on the basis of religion.

You sitting there ranting that I ever said "kill any religious nut" doesn't make it true :)

Though yes religion is a despicable thing and should generally be avoided and undermined.

No, that is exactly what you have said a few times:

Does he deserve death?

He's a religious nut. Yes he does.

And then...

So you are a secular nut.
