Aside from the fact that much of the SAA is composed of Sunni conscripts, yes. My point was that it was the unpopularity and incompetence of the regime that kept the opposition alive, not some joint Saudi-US project.

I imagine they probably didn't spend a lot of time reflecting on it
Well...they probably have now. DEZ is pretty deep in ISIS territory. If we can kill a leader there, we can get one basically anywhere. I doubt that even the most hardened ISIS fighters will be able to protect their leaders from American special forces, so they're likely looking for ways to hide their whereabouts from US intelligence.

It had been coming for some time, which is why we didn't see it coming . (I love this article)

What's the old joke about the British Intelligence officer who retired in 1950, saying that over a 40 year career he'd predicted peace on the continent every time, and only been wrong twice?

It's a handy little bit of messaging alright. The deeper they go into cover, the less capable they are of exercising regular control over a spread-out empire/state.
Worth noting, Democrats: President Trump will have a Pen and a Phone. #Precedent.

Canadian forces have been fighting ISIS for a while and of course, as with US Forces and all Allied Forces, we support them 100%. Canadian soldiers clash with ISIL in Iraq - Al Jazeera English
