An incoming Boston University professor who called “white college males” a “problem population” and was publicly criticized by the university’s president said on Tuesday she regrets making the remarks.

Black sociology professor Saida Grundy, who completed her doctorate at the University of Michigan last year, had declared on her now-private Twitter account that “white masculinity is THE problem for America’s colleges.”

In other recent tweets, she said, “Deal with your white (expletive), white people. slavery is a (asterisk)YALL(asterisk) thing,” and “Every MLK week I commit myself to not spending a dime in white-owned businesses. And every year I find it nearly impossible.”

Grundy on Tuesday said events in the United States over the past year have made “the inconvenient matter of race” an unavoidable topic, but she expressed remorse over what she had said.

“I regret that my personal passion about issues surrounding these events led me to speak about them indelicately,” she said in a statement. “I deprived them of the nuance and complexity that such subjects always deserve.”

Yet, still is going to be teaching at Boston University, which is ridiculous. It's pretty obvious she hasn't exactly put in the level of academic research into her b.s. statement in the first place (hint: it isn't white masculinity that is the problem for American colleges, it's a culture of boozing and sex).

Anyways, the biggest issue, how can she be expected to be impartial at all in the classroom? Hell to even give all the "nuance and complexity?" When you go so far as to avoid white businesses during MLK week, I fail to see how you can be expected to give students fair treatment in your classroom, especially if they dare disagree with what you believe.

The appology was extremely weak.

I deprived them of the nuance and complexity that such subjects always deserve

How, exactly, does one express their racism with proper "nuance and complexity"?

Better yet, how does she avoid "white businesses" during MLK week? Does she just not go shopping at all, not for food or anything? Does she not pay her mortgage or rent?

Clearly, this woman doesn't know how business works, and that speaks to the staff competency at Boston University.

Sure, she seems a hateful jerk. But, if she wants to be and attracts tuitions to the school? Call her an bigot. Show the numbers. Laugh in her face. But she can say, what she likes.

She regrets being heard, isn't that ironic. Of course, we have a whole class of people who do nothing but try to find people saying something they disagree with. Outrage is become a national obsession.

The old Overhear Statement --> Outrage --> ??? --> Profit model has finally solved for ???. The new procedure is as follows:

Overhear Statement --> Outrage --> GoFundMe --> Profit

Last line in the article...

Brown, the university president, said Grundy will report for work on July 1.

 Really? If a white professor had said the same things only of some other race you can be damn sure that professor would have been fired on the spot.

And...

But supporters said the comments weren’t racist. They started the hashtag (hash)IStandWithSaida and launched an online petition that notes the university, the largest in Massachusetts in terms of enrollment, is the place where the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. earned his doctorate.

“Racism extends to virtually every institution in American society – including higher education,” the petition reads. “Calling Professor Grundy’s tweets racist minimizes the very real effects of racism for people of color in the United States.”

You can also be damned sure that these SAME supporters of this "professor" would have started this online petition to get the a white professor fired and would be having an entirely different message.

Speaking of which...last I knew MLK Jr expressed racial equality, not racial hatred which that black professor obviously has towards whites.

She is hateful, and the mission of a university isn't to generate revenues but, rather, ideas. Disciplined, reasonable, scholarly ideas.

As coyotedelmar has already noted, she's already publicized her bias toward white males. Insta-grade challenges and accusations of creating a hostile class environment. Grundy needs a little HR training on what constitutes harassment.

Not that too many of this demographic are probably going to be drawn to her interests, which are (as stated on her CV) “race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, men and masculinity, intersectionality, and ‘qualitative methodology: feminist theory, inequality, and urban ethnography.”

I think we can all see the niche picture here.

If her Master’s thesis or articles are any indication, her issues aren’t limited to white men.

Damn, she sounds angry and obviously hates white men. Lucky for her she's black. If a white man said the same things she did about black females, BU would have done an about face on his hiring.

Hopefully she's learned her lesson and will express future sentiments using a platform that can make use of the proper complexity and nuance. Like Reddit.

Well that is somewhat true. But this woman is freaking idiot. It is quite obvious that she has generalized all white people into one pool that she hates. I just wonder what she does with someone who is biracial? half hate them?

if she was white and said those things about black people she would be fired instantly no questions asked.
if it was a white student that said those things they would be dismissed instantly.

the hypocrisy of the situation is amazing and the double standard of racism as long as it isn't white racism is for some reason tolerable.

Oh, no question that our society is somewhat sick.

I think students should boycott her classes. if she has no students then there will be no reason for the college to keep her.
of course she is teaching African studies which I do believe is just an elective class unless now they have made it mandatory to take.

they should just not take her class and leave her to sit in a room by herself.
if I was a white student I wouldn't take her class and I would protest the school if I was forced to citing racial discrimination and a hostile
study environment.

Oh, no question that our society is somewhat sick.

somewhat? no it is 100% diseased and it is we as a society that has allowed for this to happen because we have abandoned truth
for feelings and emotional rants of people.

gone are the days of telling people like this to shut up and sit down. we have become a country of wimps and whiner's that allow
this type of situation to occur.

BU should have fired her on the spot and dismissed her outright.

instead they tried to defend it by saying she has a 1st amendment right to say it. it wasn't until major donors to the school
started pulling their wallets that the college came out and said anything against it.

which means they still support her.
for a college that supposedly doesn't tolerate racism they sure give the definition a wide berth when it comes to white racism.

Bull ****, YOUR OUTTA HERE! Did the white people riot and burn class rooms?

If some people didn't have double standards, they have no standards at all.

To be fair, white college males are a problem population. I would know, I was one of them.

The threat title should be changed to "professor regrets being held accountable for calling white college males a problem population".

She still believes whites are THE problem, and I'm sure she has learned her lesson to make her racist statements in a less public forum the next time, and to continue her racist behavior more subtlety in the future.

That's generally how it goes.

Except when they get six figure windfalls from gofundme, anyway.

White privilege and misogyny ARE issues, but she didn't say that. She shows an obvious bigotry against white men in general. I have no confidence her bigotry won't bleed over into how she grades her students.

It is odd that this womans comments are somehow far worse.

School director fired after racial graduation comment

****ty ass double standard. The crap needs to stop on all fronts, and this professor should not be protected just because she said it about white people.

That professor's comments were bad and I think a firing would be justified. But that principal's comments WERE far wrose.

The professor was spouting off her stupid bigotry on her personal twitter account about white males in general. The Principal, spouted her hatred at actual families in person at an official function in her capacity as the head of the school.

They are both bad, but it is blatantly obvious which is worse.

No. Thats where we disagree. Both of these people exhibited ignorance and hatred at the same level. The only difference really is in their race. As a country as long as we are condemning racism by some and excusing racism by others (on either side) we arent going to make progress. Racism as a whole needs to be condemned.

Nah, reddit might still get voted down, Tumblr is the real place to have complex and nuanced discussion!
