It's a problem with humanity itself. I mean, let's not forget the "Lolita Express" and the many public figures who enjoyed what Jeffrey Epstein had to offer. My guess is that the percent of the general population who are pedophiles is about the same as those who are in a ministry.

Yes, and I believe I talked about all of that in my original post.

It also wasn't just Christian organizations involved in these sorts of hush ups. It was just the way molestation and misconduct cases tended to be handled in general.

Remember the Boy Scouts scandal, for example?

Up to fairly recently, most organizations were interested in avoiding bad press more than anything else.

None of this makes it right, of course. However, the Church has moved to make amends and correct the problem in the time since.

No, there are plenty of others that are just as bad, there are sex scandals among the Jews, among the Muslims, among Buddhists, etc. There should be absolutely no exception made for religion, which just isn't the case today. Prosecute EVERYONE equally and hold ALL ORGANIZATIONS accountable.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide the world that cannot be achieved more rationally through entirely secular means.

I wouldn't disagree. Though I would argue that the steps the Church has already taken seem to be working more than adequately so far.

My understanding is that because of its more "central" organization, the Catholic Church in recent years has been more "transparent" than other denominations in its insurer-required reporting. Catholic priests no guiltier of sex abuse than other clergy

The only thing that is new is that, now, he is apparently targeting women who are trying to escape the Church. And if anything, I find that to be a step backwards, as though the Church has any right to decide whether a given woman will or won't be in it. They don't consent to being in the Church. Leave them alone.

Where in the world did you get that idea?

It's not like the Pope can FORCE them back in. He's offering absolution for those that want it. Those that don't want it surely don't feel any need to take it.

If they're 'trying to escape the church' then this offer is hardly some kind of coercion to drag them back in... only those interested in being reconciled to the Catholic Church would be interested.
