You seem to think if you just give families a bunch of free books, then all of the parents will magically be able to and want to read them to their children. This is a very naive way of thinking. So, no, it doesn't solve both problems. Some parents truly just don't care.

A lot of Americans have serious problems in many areas demonstrated by their lack of parenting skills, lack of concern for their child's education and lack of self-control. Money is one of the LAST reasons why a child comes to school significantly less educated than his peers.

However, ongoing poverty does, I think, contribute to the situation - if more options were available, perhaps the parents would have had a better environment during their own formative period.

Families who have had a cycle of poverty for many generations yet are incredibly dedicated to their children's education, teach their children good working habits and help them learn to make good choices are going to have children who are successful in school almost always. It's not poverty that makes people disinterested in helping their children succeed, it's just that most disinterested parents live in poverty.

“I don’t think parents reading their children bedtime stories should constantly have in their minds the way that they are unfairly disadvantaging other people’s children, but I think they should have that thought occasionally,” he said.

This is a joke or this guy is one of the most stupid people on the planet... How about I read to my kids and consider that an parenting and if other parents don't want to do it then they can consider themselves disadvantaging their own children because I have nothing to do with it. This is PC gone ****ing insane.

Uhm, what do you think? Is "unfairly" advantaging their children something parents should even concern themselves with or feel bad about? According to the article, it is.
Attention grabbing nonsense. It's sounds like something a conservative would come up with to parody his skewed perception of liberal thinking.

For some... look, books are there for those that want them. Libraries, book sales were they are .50 cents and garage sales are all over the place. Most ignorant and uneducated parents simply will not read to their kids no matter what. I have many students that will recieve an insult or a punch before anything else... they eat candy or chips and drink soda for breakfast every day.

Except that's a bull**** claim. Info on the dude has been posted in this thread. Believe it or not, there are some on the left who are actually nutty all on their own. You'll never believe that though, will you? He must actually be a conservative (and nothing will convince you otherwise). Lol.

you're consistent, I'll give you that

Yep -- and one of the biggest problems with the kids I teach --- lack of sleep.
