There is an issue having one easier physical test to get into the academy, and another more demanding one to graduate from the academy. Why waste spots and time/resources on people you have no idea will pass the more demanding test? It makes way more sense to do the test as a REQUIREMENT to get into the academy. At least you know they can handle the physical side.

I understand the utility of screening tests, and yes, you said you were against lower qualified candidates getting the job based on minority status-but the idea that is should be the reverse is indeed lefty bs.

We keep hearing this, but reality in the military, fire department, and police show its much less common-and that therefore the results (few women) are somehow a problem in an of themselves-enough even to lower standards to achieve the desired outcome.
 
In the wildland fire community the standards for basic firefighter is the same regardless of gender.
Hotshot crew members have a higher standard but make no exception to gender
Smokejumpers have higher standards , but are the same regardless of gender.

Through the years tasks (work expected to be done) and the fitness level required to carry out the task were developed. The task does not care about gender, race, religion, etc.

Lowering standards can create resentment among firefighters. One could ask if person A (female) gets a pass on something , then why not Person B (male).

There are more minorities and women in fire today than 30 years ago. There will most likely be more in the future as women decide they would like a career in fire. Ones I talked to before I retired wanted no special breaks or favors. They just wanted the opportunity. They realized it will take time to build the experience and training to someday be in top fire management positions.

Do you believe there should be different standards for firefighters based on gender?
If a male can do what the women in the OP can do, should he also be allowed to be hired?

I don't particular agree with TDK post. The fact remains that not all men or women can pass the standards for firefighters. One should not make exceptions. A person can either meet the standards or they cannot.

The reason that the test to get into the academy (any academy of this type actually) is easier than the one graduating is because during their training the people are essentially trained for more endurance. Also knowledge of how to do something in a better way can greatly improve your ability to do the job. So having the harder, graduate test, done in order to get into the academy would leave out those that are perfectly qualified to do the job so long as they are taught and trained. Which means you have less of a pool of firefighters to pull from than with the entry test being weaker.

umm no they don't. read the contract you sign when you join the military. you don't have standing to sue as you knowingly and willingly put yourself into danger.
because that case was already settled months ago and so therefore it is irrelevant. evidently it isn't to strong as a court of law already decided that it wasn't.

of course this has nothing to do with the situation at hand. which is the fact that the city is liable if this women causes injury to someone and they knowingly allowed her into a situation.
 
Love the anecdotal stuff....like less competent white men were never hired over more highly qualified blacks or women due to personal or organizational bias?

Tell you what, if the problem is people being irresponsible by not being able to open jars I will be cool. As it is, its people having kids out of wedlock/relationship, sitting on the public dole, not raising their own kids, etc. Im more concerned about that.

Hey, I'm all for reducing the people doing those things too. Hence I'm always suprised when people put up roadblocks to all the legal options for people to do so.

And this sort of crap has been going on for 45 years. Affirmative action is also unconstitutional on its face since it clearly violates the "equal protection" clause of the 14th amendment. Yet the war on white males continues and liberals tell us AA is all about FIGHTING discrimination!!

Even liberals know affirmative action is completely indefensible. Their usual response is to refuse to even discuss the issue.
