Rick Santorum on Bruce Jenner: "If he says he's a woman, then he's a woman"

Might me more convincing if he (Santorum) didn't keep saying "he".

Maybe there's something old buttoned-down uptight Rick isn't sharing with us ...

I'd have preferred he said something like "None of my business" and left it at that.

Pronouns can be tricky when you're talking about transgender folks--what's correct, I mean, changes before and after. Jenner is in between; he's transitioning now. Once he's chosen a new name, I think "she" will be easier as well as correct.

True. It just struck me as a bit of a funny statement. Most people will respond to the visual clues pretty much automatically.

This reminds me of how I've used "s/he" in online forums when the gender of the poster is unknown -

Maybe it's now perfectly appropriate for those 'in-betweeners' like Mr/Ms Jenner!

Until Bruce comes out as "her", as explained in the interview, it's okay. Besides, slips happen, as long as he wasn't being intentionally a douche about the "he" who cares?

A rare moment of kindness from such a prick. I sometimes have to wonder if a lot of the loud bible thumping from political leaders is just an act.

Which puts him one up on you. ;)

Whatever the person is comfortable with. As far as I understand, Bruce still wants male pronouns to be used to address him. That will probably change soon, though. Once they say, hey, use these pronouns, that's when you switch. Or, if they're living as their desired gender and it's obvious.

You know an issue is completely fubar when correctness is frowned upon.

You mean "accuracy". "Correctness" is more subjective. Here's the thing, though, while I don't pretend to fully understand the whole transgender thing, reading about it (here mostly) for awhile now, I have concluded that the issue of sexual identity is far more complicated for some than it is most. I admit to being grateful that it's not complicated for me but if someone goes through the transition, lives their life from now on as a woman, legally becomes a "she" why not just go with it?

Because I don't just go along with things to make people feel better. What good does it to peddle a lie to all of society to make a select few people feel better? I will neither accept a falsehood personally or tell it to someone else. Period.

I was thinking this too. It had to have been a slip on his part

If you had shown me that statement without telling me who said it, Ol' Frothy probably would not have been my first guess.

Someone in all seriousness, how did we survive so long with a very minority wanting to trade their balls in for a vagina or grow breasts while those with a vagina wanting to trade in to on a penis and balls. And then those who just want to act the part but keep their parts.

We got folks seeking to use their designer touch on their offspring. They discard anything that may not be considered perfect to choosing one with green eyes and blonde hair. What a sick world we live in.
