Obama Chooses Chicago to Host His Presidential Library

ABCNews
WASHINGTON — May 1, 2015

President Barack Obama has chosen his hometown of Chicago to host his future presidential library, two individuals with knowledge of the decision said, placing the permanent monument to his legacy in the city that launched his improbable ascent to the White House. Obama's library will be built on Chicago's South Side, where the University of Chicago has proposed two potential sites not far from the Obama family's home. It was unclear which of the two sites had been selected, but an official announcement was expected within weeks. For Chicago, the decision solidifies the city's claim to Obama and the legacy of the nation's first black president. Yet it marks a harsh letdown for New York and Honolulu, two other cities that played pivotal roles in Obama's journey and competed fiercely to host the library.

Obama's decision to place the library in Chicago was conveyed to The Associated Press Thursday by two individuals with direct knowledge of the decision. Both spoke on condition of anonymity because the decision hasn't been publicly announced. Obama's foundation, the White House, the University of Chicago and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office all declined to comment.
The other three final contestants were the University of Hawaii, New York's Columbia University, and the University of Illinois at Chicago. The Chicago Park District, which owns the two properties under consideration, says it will donate the chosen land parcel for this purpose. Both parcels are either on or very close to Chicago's lakefront in the Hyde Park neighborhood where the Obama home is located.

Has it been announced yet that Emanuel will be leading the Obama Foundation?

Before anyone goes off saying this is political and a bad choice, presidents usually build their presidential cities in the cities that they come from. I'm just curious as to why Obama built his library in the ****tiest part of the city? Is he hoping to spark hope and change in Chicago's South Side? Is it another bad choice? Should he put it in the most Republican part of Chicago just to give a final middle finger to the GOP?

Not to my knowledge. Nor have any architectural plans been published thus far.

Hyde Park is home to the University of Chicago and its highly regarded hospital complex. IIRC, the area is racially diverse and mostly professional.

I thought all of Chicago was ****ty. Specially, the South Side of Chicago. That's what the media tells Conservatives and Liberals.

As someone from Chicago, south side is not "the ****tiest."

As far as ****ty parts of Chicago go, they can largely be attributed to a few zip codes and a few neighborhoods. I've lived in the south side, Loyola, Wrigleyfield, and the south suburbs and never had a bad experience anywhere.

Hyde Park is a pretty decent moderately affluent neighborhood anchored by U 0f C and right on the Lakefront. I recall Obama's next-door-neighbor's house selling for something like $1.4M, which seems commensurate with the area. Hyde Park is surrounded on two sides by really lousy neighborhoods though, and I'm not particular a fan of the neighborhood in terms of, "Would I buy there?

But it probably is the premium so-called 'racially integrated' neighborhood in the city proper, and has a great cultural vibe due to U of C. I've hung there from time-to-time & even partied into the night - and I'm as white as they come, unless you'd like to count a touch of extra depth during a summer sun-tan that comes out due my Mom's Southern Italian (Calabrese) blood.

No where else would take that worthless POS!

Presidents tend to build libraries in the states where they had their political and professional careers.

Nope. The U of Chicago area is a decent part of town, and if you know Obamas history, he's lived there and worked on improving it since he arrived in Chicago in the 80s.

This will be a spur for more South Side development and exposure, and is a fitting cap to his efforts when he was a community organizer on the Soyth Side and a state rep there. It will spur development and visibility to an often invisible area to non-locals.

He chose Chicago? I thought it was the city that was going to choose him, and I also thought Chicago had already rejected him.

I hope you are using that term loosely.

Yes, because being a lawyer and University professor at one of the top Universities in the world isn't a 'professional career', and being elected to both the state legislature and then to the Senate, and then President of the US isn't considered a 'political career'.

I'm guessing you think you have to be white to have those....

Why ?
I sense an upcoming "put-down" .
Being a community organizer is professional, IMO. As is an auto mechanic ..results and satisfied customers/clients matter .

Yet he was only a CO before going back to law school.

It's like calling a my doctor a stock boy because he worked summers in college at a Costco.

Wow. It only took me 2 days on the site to be called a racist for not worshiping Obama. :lamo

No I wouldnt call a lawyer coming up in the most corrupt city in America, who voted "present" nearly every time, 2 year Senator, then the leader of the most corrupt Constitution-hating administration of all time who puts ideology ahead of country a professional. I cant think of a few other words to call him though.

I even have a very good N word to call him. Narcissist.

Fun fact, Presidential libraries didnt exist before 1939, like much of this politician worship culture we have today. Why they cant just put their papers in the Library of Congress, and they have to have a special palace built for them, I dont know. Fact 2- taxpayers spend 100million (that we dont have) on these pointless monuments.

Didn't say racist. But it's interesting that you'd consider a guy who was a lawyer, professor, state legislator, US Senator and President as not having a professional career.

What would make him different from others with that career path that would make someone dismiss his accomplishments? Gosh. It's hard to say!

That is just disgusting. Reminds me of all the buildings named after McConnell. Usually buildings are named after people who did something great, or donated from their personal fortune. He hasnt even done anything "great" except being a slimey politician. Gross.

:lamo Backtrack a little faster why dont you? Your bold message was received LOUD AND CLEAR.

I didnt say he didnt have a "professional career" I said he wasnt a professional. Anyone who pays attention can see that he is more high schooler than he is professional.

Yet you jump right to race and made the assertion that I was a racist? :lamo What a sad, tired, and downright PATHETIC accusation. Were in year 7...I have plenty of CONTENT OF CHARACTER to judge Obama upon....Who was that again who wanted people judged by the content of their character and not their skin color? Some famous dude...but I cant remember the name. Can you help me?

This is the most anti-Constitutional President of ALL TIME....and his actions are only half of the problem, the other half is the PRECEDENTS he is setting. We are in trouble...it doesnt hurt that every time you criticize him you are met with accusations of being a racist. You arent just part of the problem, you ARE the problem.

LOL.

Thanks for the info, Rush.

Or the bridges, post offices, and roads. Monuments to the people who built this country 250 years ago are one thing. We dont need libraries to every nobleman who got elected to an office.

Thanks for the white-flag lack of a rebuttal. You cant even defend the man you support and voted for twice.

Exactly. They are monuments to crony capitalism if anything.

.

I can. But as I've said before, you can't reason a man into understanding a position he didn't reason himself in to.
