Petraeus sentenced: 2 years probation; $100K fine - CNNPolitics.com

april 23 2015
Gen. David Petraeus, once a widely celebrated military leader who oversaw operations in Afghanistan and Iraq and was touted as a potential presidential candidate, was sentenced to serve two years on probation and to pay an $100,000 fine on Thursday for sharing classified information with his biographer and lover, Paula Broadwell.

Some have characterized the agreement, in which Petraeus only pleads guilty to a misdemeanor, as too lenient.

Abbe Lowell, a lawyer who represents a government leaker currently in jail for sharing information with the media, said in a letter to the Justice Department that the deal showed a "profound double standard."

Don't hyperventilate. It was a misdemeanor and no information was disclosed to the public.

The sentence of probation is normal this type of offense.

When this thread title shows up on the home page, it just says "Traitor General Petraeus gets off..."

Yeah right. Generals giving away classified info is no big deal!!!

Yep, since it is a misdemeanor, it is no big deal.

He's an idiot, arguably should have been charged with a felony, but he is not a traitor. He doesn't come close to committing treason as defined in the constitution

Which is what it should be.

Sorry, and I am not all that familiar, but isn't this a tempest in a thimble?

You don't understand how the law works. This could have easily been handled as a felony but the prosecutor said no. Why?

You must be using one of them new loose and liberal definitions of the word traitor.

getting off was what led him astray!

Re: Traitor General Petraeus gets off with misdemeanor and probation. No jail or fe

Giving classified information to your girlfriend because she is giving you tail is repulsive but shouldn't be called "treason'.

IIRC there is no indication that information was leaked to hostiles by the general.

Read the rules on posting an OP in MSM and such. Title must match the headline. Trying to save you some grief.

True! Ja, he did spill the beans with his mistress of all people. What an idiot, threw away a fantastic career over this foolishness.

Well it's a good thing she wasn't a foreign spy.

When others are held to a similar standard, such as Hillary, get back to me.

Pity really, because he was not a bad soldier. But they might have hit him harder, really. On the other hand, was what he did worse than $100K, probation and the embarrassment?

Re: Traitor General Petraeus gets off with misdemeanor and probation. No jail or fe

Nice title that doesn't match the article.

For what he did, traitor can be applied to so many in government. Are you planning on applying that title to all of them? Effing disgusting.

Wasn't Snowden's life destroyed when he released classified information? Yes General Betray-us isn't being held to the same standard at all.

I would like this general to have his life ruined and him having to flee the country as well or I would like to see Snowden charged and convincted in absentia with similar punishments.

I would also like to see John McCain charged and convicted because he went to Syria and met with members of Al-Qaeda and ISIS and gave them classified information.

"Traitor General Petraeus gets off with misdemeanor and probation. No jail or felony"

The crime with which he was charged is a misdemeanor. How would you suggest that he "got off" with anything? Been reading too many blogs?

If every person ever in the military was imprisoned for telling information to their lover or spouse we'd need to at least double the number of prison cells in this country - which already the world's record.

The prosecution of the MISDEMEANOR offense was to silence Petraeus from being critical of current policy. That was the REAL deal that was made with him. "Shut up and we won't put you in a jail cell." So he shut up and the deal made.

That's the official story anyway. I suspect it was much worse than that. More likely he SOLD classified info to our enemies. Whenever a govt official admits wrongdoing, you can be sure it's just the tip of the iceberg.

I don't know if that's true or false but so what anyway? The "everybody does it" excuse is crap. If ted cruz did something like this, liberals would scream for his scalp and say no excuse is acceptable.

Tells why and then tells us why the case should have been handled as a felony.

How was Snowden's life destroyed for giving thousands of pages to Rusia? He is living free in Russia with a couple of young Russian chicks.

I would like this general to have his life ruined and him having to flee the country.
Why do you hate Petraeus? He fell in love?

I would also like to see John McCain charged and convicted because he went to Syria and met with members of Al-Qaeda and ISIS and gave them classified information.
So yoiu just hate Republicans. Or are you ready to condemn the Clintons, 0bama and Kerry for treason??

Section 3
1: Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort

0bama, Kerry and both Clintons have give aid and comfort to our enemies.

I'm sure you have a high quality citation for, even partially, substantiating this assertion. Yes?
