Cop snatches phone and smashes it (gets caught on video anyway)

That cop was out of line, imo. That said, there's an app created for just such situations called "MobileJustice" that automatically sends the video to the ACLU. But it also locates other MobileJustice app users in the area so they can record the police actions, too.

Interesting that the woman filming was herself being filmed
.

Huh. It is.

And I stand by what I said too. Police work just isn't that dangerous. Their rhetoric just doesn't line up with the statistics.

 then Police also just don't abuse people. The rhetoric equally doesn't line up.

It may be that the cop had asked her not to record the cops because some of them are undercover and need to keep their faces off of the TV..

There may be some extremely rare circumstance when seizing a phone or camera is justifiable, but I can't think of any justification for a cop destroying a device.

Ok, I give you that...So reprimand the cop...Does this really need an entire thread other than to continue the smear of police today?

Let me just say, from the short snippet of what happened that we saw, I do NOT condone the police officers actions, however, don't we have to ask ourselves why it is that outlets like NBC are pushing this meme...? I mean, you and others that can be so easily manipulated by a 10 second snip of footage, and a narrative need to back up a moment, and check why you are falling for this silliness.

If you don't condone the cops actions, then why are you scolding others for complaining about them?

:lamo: thanks for that one....now that's funny right there...only thing better is if you'd have said once engaged with the app an ACLU liberal parachutes directly to the scene....hahahahaha

So you think it's only liberals interested in protecting Americans civil liberties?

Clearly you are having all kinds of problems actually reading the posts tonight....Work on that...

So you think it's only liberals interested in protecting Americans civil liberties?

What? wait where did I say that...Oh that's right I didn't.

Snapping spines, shooting people in the back, beating people endlessly, despite the fact their in surrender posture, choking people to death, and much more, is what smears the police. Not the press or the rest of us pointing to it.

Or is it the press cherry picking incidents to paint a picture, and you fall for it....Thanks for revealing that..

Again....proximity is the key here....Don't want that to happen? I'd suggest you don't make yourself a pest by trying to capture your footage so close to what is happening.
So what you are saying is that if you may have broke the law it is ok for the cop to determine guilt and dish out punishment all on his own. Do you not see a problem with this. What he did is illegal and he should be punished and lose his job.

This is exactly why cops behave as if they are above the law. Because too many people like you are ok with it.

What? wait where did I say that...Oh that's right I didn't.

You said you don't condone the cops actions, and then went on to scold a poster. And you said you're surprised that a liberal from the ACLU didn't parachute down.

So if I grab someone's phone and break it will I just get a reprimand. Of course not. Why is the cop heals to a lower standard than an ordinary citizen. How do you not see a problem with this.

No, but notice that you first had to create a strawman argument to attack what I am saying, then proceed to move straight to punishment....So tell me, what "punishment" do you think fits his egregious action of breaking a cell phone? Death penalty?

So, you're denying that police abuse exists, and the press is cherry picking, I see. I don't care what you think, we have a problem in America with police corruption, brutality, and abuse, and we are going to get this resolved. Have you noticed the response to all this from foreign posters here. Btw, are you a cop?

What straw man did I create.

As to what punishment he should get, in my opinion he should get the same punishment that your average citizen would get. Also if I was the chief and this particular cop had shown the slightest type of behavior before he would be fired. If he can not be trusted to act according to the law than he sure as hell shouldn't be a cop.

Watch: LAPD deputy snatches woman's cellphone - One News Page VIDEO

More over the top actions by police who somehow believe they are above the law.

Note: The way she's holding the device and the loudness of the smash on the ground leads me to suspect it wasn't a cell phone, but as Today as reported a "camera".

Ah, I didn't see this thread, I posted one...d'oh!

Anyway, this is so typical....it is not against the law to film police.

They obviously don't like people observing them do they?

What are they hiding?

What a goon, I hope he gets busted down hard.

Whatever punishments deemed appropriate by a judge or jury based on the laws that may have been broken. Looks to me like assault, robbery, and possibly a first amendment violation. For starters.

California penal code (240) prescribes up to six months jail for simple assault and a 1k fine. I think there are several other potential charges. Use google if you want to start adding it up. Also this man should face whatever penalties are drawn up in LA sherrifs conduct rules.

You think what he did is OK?

It seems that example after example after example keeps popping up and yet some people still can't seem to grasp that there's an issue here that needs to see the light of day.

They don't that's a creation of the 1033 program, the war on terror, and the desire to turn the police into a domestic military force. What you are seeing, is the backlash to militarizing the police.

Police, in times of historic peace, low crime, are treating this country like a warzone and gearing up as if it's an occupation. It's not the other way around.,

I mean, a tactical beard?

LAPD facial hair policy:

"Facial hair is permitted for on-duty officers in uniform with the permission of the Chief of Police. All facial hair shall be clean, neatly trimmed, and will present a professional appearance. Permission to wear beards, moustaches, and goatees may be withdrawn by the Chief at any time."

So, for what reason does this high speed, low drag "operator" need to have an unkempt bear while on duty?

We both know the reason, cause all the cool socom d00ds and contractors do it in iraq and afghanistan (with good reason, reason that is lacking in LA)

Just for the record, this situation has nothing to do with the LAPD. The offending officer, still on the job by the way, is a U.S. Marshall

It's so childish. Literally. You see preschoolers act that at recess - stomping over and snatching toys out of others' hands.

Maybe he didn't have his nap?

The problem I have is that he acts with such impunity. Now I am a reasonable person and I'll eat my words if there is a good explanation for what happened, but I just can't imagine a good reason for what happened in this video, or perhaps I just lack a good imagination.
