Iran Sends Ships Toward Blockaded Yemen Port, Raising Fears Of Escalating Conflict With Saudi Arabia

    April 18 2015

Iran is sending a small armada of naval vessels toward Yemen, sparking concern among U.S. defense officials that a naval conflict between Iran and Saudi Arabia could escalate the Yemen conflict from a proxy war into a full-scale international conflict, according to media reports.
The convoy of nine ships which reportedly includes an Iranian destroyer, could be attempting to ferry weapons to the Houthi rebels in Yemen. Iran says this convoy is part of an anti-piracy campaign. On April 1, a US Navy warship consenually boarded a Panamanian cargo ship bound for Yemen. An Iranian ship currently docked in Oman is being watched for signs of weapons-transfer. There are Egyptian and Pakistani warships patrolling the waters off Yemen. It is unknown what may happens if the Iranian convoy attempts to dock in Yemen.

Smelling like a full blown proxy war.

This might make some understand why the Iranian bomb is of such interest to others.

Mornin Simplexity. The Destroyer was seen Wednesday with another ship.....having it there Iran is flexing some muscle. In the meantime we joined in by refueling the Saud's Coalition of planes. Egypt has offered to put troops on the ground and AQ has become vocal too.

SANAA, Yemen (AP) — Iran dispatched a destroyer and another naval ship to waters off Yemen on Wednesday, raising the stakes amid a Saudi-led air campaign targeting Iranian-backed Shiite rebels fighting forces loyal to the country's embattled president.

On Wednesday, al-Qaida in Yemen, a staunch rival of the Houthis, posted a video offering a bounty of 44 pounds (20 kilograms) of gold for whoever captures or kills the rebel leader and his prime ally in Yemen, ousted president Saleh.

Along with the ongoing military campaign, Arab countries have lobbied members of the U.N. Security Council to adopt a draft resolution that would ban arms shipments to the rebels and their allies. The draft calls on all parties to resolve their differences through dialogue and accelerate U.N.-brokered negotiations on a political transition.....snip~

The Saudi coalition has severely degraded or destroyed most major airports in Yemen. To resupply her proxy Houthi forces, the only viable option remaining to Iran is via ships.

This could get ugly fast if the Iranian ships attempt to break the coalition blockade.

The Saud has responded back.....the Pakistani will help hold the blockade, as they already had two ships in the area. The Egyptians have ships as well.

AQ putting a bounty on Selah's head was the other twist to the story.

Pakistan agrees to send ships to block arms shipments to Yemen rebels.....

Yielding to pressure from staunch ally Saudi Arabia, Pakistan has agreed to help an Arab military coalition enforce an arms embargo against Houthi rebels in Yemen and is expected to announce the deployment of navy warships to the busy commercial shipping lanes off Yemen’s coast. In a statement posted late Thursday, the office of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said a high-powered Pakistani delegation had “affirmed to the Saudi leadership that Pakistan would fully participate and contribute to the implementation” of the arms embargo, which was set in place Wednesday by a United Nations Security Council resolution.

The U.N. Security Council approved the resolution, proposed by Qatar, a member of the Saudi-led coalition, after Russia, an ally of Iran in Middle East politics, abstained.

Pakistan’s naval contribution to the arms embargo against Houthi rebels in Yemen is an easy option, because two warships already are deployed in Indian Ocean waters near Yemen as part of multinational task forces patrolling the area to interdict al Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula militants and pirates based in the Horn of Africa.

Our "allies" in the region need live fire training just as much as we do. Actually, having worked with the Saudi's before, they need it a lot more than we do.

If anyone has an interest in the Region, then having them actively participate is a good thing. It is their region after all. Even third string players need playing time and considering the level of the competition, why should we put in the 1st team players?

Air time to where the ports /ships are from Saudi should not take long, if needed.
