Hidden cameras show airport workers stealing from bags - CNN.com

Miami (CNN)—Inside a plane at Miami International Airport, baggage handlers are going on a shopping spree with passengers' bags.

What they don't know is that they are being recorded on a hidden camera. The Miami-Dade Police Department set up the camera as part of an ongoing police investigation into luggage thefts by the very airport workers who are supposed to get bags safely onto planes.
"It's a problem we all face," said police Lt. Pete Estis. "We will continue to be proactive until we can see that the claims of pilfering through luggage will actually decrease."
Wow, the airlines are not only charging you to check in your luggage, they are lightening them up for you. :3oops: Now we'll need Air Marshalls among baggage handlers. I bet these turds belong to a union too.

This has been happening since forever and has been well known. The airlines aren't interested in fixing this problem.

Ummm, isn't that what the hidden cameras are for?

No, they can be used for a wide variety of things. They may fire a few folk, but I doubt it will go much beyond that.

Did you not read the OP?

I work for the airlines, it is not possible to stop.

as long as people have bags which can be opened these things are going to happen......i have worked the terminal gates for many years, as an aircraft tech.

Yes, the police department did. I said the airlines aren't too interested in fixing the problem. Did you not read my post. I don't think this needs to be stated, but just in case, the police and the airlines are two different entities.

The police would not have been able to set the cameras and keep them hidden without the cooperation of the airlines and the airport.

But the police said they put up the cameras to stop the thieves.

Yes, I'm sure they would cooperate with authorities, and I think that's about as far as it's going to go aside from some firings. But policy changes? Actual efforts to curtail? I doubt it.

Miami is pretty bad for baggage theft, same with LA. Usually when an ariline farms out its handling to another company you get more theft. Lower wages, no flight benefits, and no direct oversight by airline managers, = theft.

Yet another reason to not ever check luggage.

I met a manager for DHS airport security who told me that the staff that search checked bags are not monitored. I wonder how often they are the thieves.

I usually don't, but then they grab your bag to put below on the smaller planes.

Yeah I know but I kind of get the feeling that there's less chance to mess with your stuff.
