Rubio tells donors he is running for White House

<snip>

MIAMI (AP) — Sen. Marco Rubio is telling his top donors that he is running for president because he feels "uniquely qualified" to pitch his Republican Party as one that will defend the American Dream.

The first-term Republican from Florida told his biggest backers on a conference call on Monday that he sees the coming presidential campaign as a choice between the past and the future. In a swipe at Democratic rival Hillary Rodham Clinton, Rubio said the former first lady "is a leader from yesterday."

Rubio says he has always felt the United States is about tomorrow.

Does he have a chance?

I don't know. The Republicans have a bad habit of running candidates that all but concede key points in their opposition to the DNC. With Rubio we have a guy about as ready for the Presidency as Obama was in 2008 in the same way that Romney really made it hard to substantially oppose Obamacare which was modeled after Romney care (granted, it is a superficial problem, but politics is the art of the superficial)

I like the guy, but he needs more executive experience for him to be my first choice.

As a VP he is perfect.

I do not see it, but then again I am having a hard time seeing a path for any Republican to win the Presidency. Holding Congress seems to be the better strategy these days.

William Kristol is right for once. Republicans are running younger and on the message of being agents of change. They sound more like Democrats than they do the cranky old person.

Unlike Rand Paul, Rubio doesn't have a rabid fan base likely to expand. Like Rand Paul, however, he has little experience.

His impact on Bush's campaign will be fascinating, but that's about all it will be. Rubio is a far better future candidate than Rand or Cruz, but he needs time to establish himself.

It's a shame Republicans are becoming taken by inexperience and ideological firebrands instead of older and wiser heads that are not interested in smashing down the existing structures of the Nation.

No. Rubio is clearly running for the VP slot or positioning himself for 2020. Similar to Cruz...positioning for 2020, Cruz' ego would never let him accept the VP slot.

This election is gonna get real nasty, real quick.

Rubio is a unique candidate in that he will dig heavily into the Hispanic vote......That just might be enough to elect him president.

You mean like Obama had when he was elected?

Older Cuban generation, not the younger.

Sounds like the Democratic nominee in 2008. Didn't Obama seek to transform this nation? Yes he did. That didn't work too well. I agree, I don't want another Obama anywhere near the Oval Office.

Not sure about older political heads. I'd rather see a non-political head in the game. I don't even necessarily agree that it has to be an older head. A very smart young person is worth more than a stubborn, clueless older person, and often the younger ones bring the best ideas to the table. They look at things in a different way.

Where will the yonger go? Surely not that old bag Hillary.

No, I am sure they are not voting Dem.
Could be Bush?
Big change in thinking between the Cuban generations.
As one fellow put it, if the embargo was lifted years ago, Castro would be gone by now. There is merit to his point.
Can’t be a little bit free, nor a tad capitalistic.

Watch, she'll pick an Hispanic running mate. Let the weeping and chest thumping from the left begin. They will pride themselves on the "historic" votes.

Look how well those historic votes worked for us last time.

Honestly, evidence in voting patterns suggests that the minority vote and the younger vote will both end up Democrat. I do not think Rubio's prior comments on Immigration will be enough to reverse the trends.

I'm all in on bottled water stocks.

:lamo Now, that was funny!

I don't know. Rubio will first have to define for the nation "what IS the American Dream"? It USE to be land/home ownership and living a comfortable middle-class lifestyle with incomes that fostered such a lifestyle while also allowing for leisure time activity and setting funds aside for a rainy day. But that "dream" has become so muddied over the years and more difficult to obtain even for those of us who put in a 40-hour work week.

So, his first challenge will have to be articulating exact what that "dream" is and how the Average Joe can turn it into reality. (Translation: Economic policy) If he's able to clearly define this dream, he would have at least gotten over one hurdle. His second: Open up that so-called "big tent" Republicans claim to possess. Right now, HIS party doesn't appear to embrace all comers.

Well, that's yet another candidate that is vastly more qualified than the clueless old bag the Democrats will put forth.

If he picks Kasich......he does. ;)

The Rubio record: From tea party hero to immigration reformer and beyond.....

On Monday, Rubio will announce his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination, using a brief Senate career that DeMint could not have imagined as his launching pad. And when he does, the one-time face of the tea party will be the most establishment candidate amid the already crowded field of sitting senators vying for the 2016 GOP nod.

Rubio and his colleagues-turned-opponents Ted Cruz of Texas and Rand Paul of Kentucky all arrived at the Senate the same way — by staging primary upsets over establishment candidates — yet their political makeup and brief stints in Congress could not be more different. Cruz and Paul spent years tending to their grassroots bases, staging dramatic filibusters and dissenting from leadership when it proved personally expedient. For his part, Rubio has been treading the path of an establishment operator, but with an edge, thanks to his unique personal story.

Sixteen laws he cosponsored between 2011 and 2014 were signed into law, according to records kept by the Library of Congress . More of those laws — six — came out of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee than from any other panel.....snip~

I don't see any rhetorical difference between your preferences and the Obama voter.
