Russia lifts ban on missile deliveries to Iran, start oil-for-goods swap

r

Vladimir Putin and Iranian president Hassan Rouhani in September 2014

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday paved the way for long-overdue missile system deliveries to Iran and Moscow started an oil-for-goods swap with Tehran, showing the Kremlin's determination to boost economic ties with the Islamic Republic. The moves come after world powers, including Russia, reached an interim deal with Iran on curbing its nuclear programme and signal that Moscow may have a head-start in the race to benefit from an eventual lifting of sanctions on Tehran.

The Kremlin said Putin signed a decree lifting Russia's own ban on the delivery of S-300 anti-missile rocket system to Iran, removing a major irritant between the two after Moscow cancelled a corresponding contract in 2010 under pressure from the West. A senior government official said separately that Russia has started supplying grain, equipment and construction materials to Iran in exchange for crude oil under a barter deal.

Russia says an arms embargo of Iran will cease when when a deal is reached with the P5+1. In the event Iran cheats on a deal, the S-300 system would make air and cruise missile strikes much more difficult.

Well, at least Putin says once the agreement is reached. They can pick up the S300. Until then....it wont be a problem. But you correct.....they will make it more difficult to go after their Nuke facilities.

You said "much" when I think you mean to say "insanely". The S300 is a bad b----.

You know what, though, I think we should just let this ride. Keep up with the talks, figure eventually the Iranians will offer us a nice deal (haven't they noticed that the President is black and has a funny name? That was supposed to produce peace), and just figure that, by the time this all get's so bad that it's completely f/ing unfixable....

.....it will be past January 2017, and will be Someone Else's Problem.

Yeah. That sounds like a great national strategy.

There's a portrait of your possible World War III adversaries, folks.

The S-300 is a defensive weapon, therefore it wasn't part of any UN ban. It was a ban requested by the US from Russia. Russia foolishly agreed, but a year or so ago the US admitted that S-300 is defensive and Russia 'chose' to ban it; US officials said they didn't demand that Russia do. If S-300 was part of UN ban, Putin wouldn't allow it's sale to Iran, since Russia actually obeys UN resolutions, unlike US and israhell. If it's lifted, then it's not part of UN bans.

Iran needs Russian grain and equipment?

Yes, they do.
Russia has lots of oil, I think.
Aside from tweaking the USA, what's in this for the Russkies?

Hm. Who needs oil and will buy it from Russia but not Iran? Oil that Russia owns and can ship out of the Persian Gulf?

What does the UN resolution say about Iran testing and using Ballistic Missiles? Where was that part about using defensive ballistic missiles, again?

Although classified as a defensive system, the S-300 can certainly be used as an offensive weapon with a target range of 155 miles. Ergo, targeted aircraft need not be in Iranian airspace. All aircraft flying over the Persian Gulf are vulnerable to attack.

Mornin Simplexity. :2wave: What do you think Putin's message to the US is? That would be with this specific move.

Do you think this will help Iran agree to the deal?

This just confirms for me that one way or the other Iran will have a nuke. Russian will have it's land bridge to Crimea The eastern Med will fall completely under Russian influence, and Iran will control the Levant, the Persian Gulf, and the approaches to the Red Sea. Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt will be left to their own devices and remedies. In two short years that region will look entirely different, and will pose nearly insurmountable problems for Western Europe as well.

Hi there MMC. What he's been saying since he rolled into Crimea ... eff off.

Do you think this will help Iran agree to the deal?
Maybe. Iran will have a highly sophisticated missile system to protect its nuclear infrastructure and a weapons daddy on the UNSC to help it out there also.

What Russia is trying to accomplish is to make up for lost leverage that has resulted from strained U.S. relations with Iran. Russia as used these strained relations as leverage against the U.S. With this agreement, the leverage will be gone, and Russia needs to create another point of leverage.

Has BO or any on his Team sent word to Putin yet? Any response back by WH Spokesperson Josh?

Yeah ... and don't forget this kind of deal is yet another red line crossed.

Russian Missile Sales to Iran Cross White House

Russia’s previous ban on selling Tehran the powerful defense system was hailed as a coup by the Obama administration and promoted by it as an example of President Obama’s ability to rein in Russian intransigence on the military front.
...
One senior Obama administration official speaking in 2010 described the S-300 sale as a “red line” for the United States that “couldn’t be crossed,” according to Foreign Policy.

Swear to God, we've become a world joke ... and that ain't an accident.

Oh my. what wasps have been disturbed by poking that nest.

If there is not war, it will be because someone wiser the Obama has interceded and found a solution. Countries do not buy missiles because they have peaceful intentions.

Obama's 2012 promise to Medvedev continues to pay dividends.

Yup.
There have been a couple of off-the-record disclosures from an inside-source about what was discussed at that meeting ... both seem plausible.

Russia needs oil?

No, Putin is just sticking his thumb in Obama's eye, as he's correctly perceived Obama as a weak and inexperienced leader, especially on international matters such as this.

Exactly!

Russia is an exporter of oil. Obviously Iran has agreed to a less than market price/swap so Putin can make a profit.

I want to hear Obama or someone in his adoring camp say they saw this coming.

Here I suggest we see the core of the failure of American foreign policy in Obamaland. Since elected we have seen a compartmentalized president, a super secretary of each portfolio as opposed to the executive position of weighing all decisions in relation to others and the consequences. He thinks politically resulting in silo decision-making.

He failed to see how Putin, who influenced the talks, would take advantage of a self involved incompetent.

The result being that when middle east leaders of all description look at a foreign power with influence, they are more likely to look to Moscow than Washington. Mr. Putin now has the cred of having helped Iran get its nuke program running again, but being the guy who gave the finger to the US after screwing Obama.
