NJ Sen. Bob Menendez indicted on federal corruption charges

Greetings, Hatuey. :2wave:

I don't know much about the man, and you may be correct, but it looks to most people like he is being railroaded on this matter because he previously disagreed with BHO on Cuba, and that's unfair treatment no matter which party you belong to, especially when you're speaking for many of the constituents who elected you to represent them in DC!

Menendez has a history with corruption going back a decade. This is just the latest episode.

Silly little liberal boy.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. Bob Menendez has been charged with using his office to improperly benefit a Florida eye doctor and political donor.

A federal grand jury on Wednesday indicted the New Jersey Democrat on charges including conspiracy to commit bribery and wire fraud.

Prosecutors had been investigating whether Menendez improperly advocated for the business interests of Dr. Salomon Melgen, including by intervening on the doctor's behalf in a medical billing dispute.

Menendez has acknowledged that he flew on Melgen's private plane to the Dominican Republic and failed at first to properly pay for the trips. He later made reimbursements.

Menendez, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has previously said he's done nothing wrong and that he and Melgen have been close friends for a long time.

They always contend they have done nothing wrong, and when convicted complain the rules are too complicated.

We have an obese senator this guy would love

Unsure, perhaps the "deal" is simply that bad. And it appears some Dems are not on board with this.

Rubio and Corker said they had the Over-ride.....but that was before BO leaned on the Purple State Democrats. The French wanted more concessions which they made known.

Hopefully all that left the talks and went home, told Kerry before they left. He don't speak for them on any agreement.

I think we should send him up to spend some time with Rob Ford. He may come out of the experience slightly more likeable.

Whoever said that BHO has no problem throwing fellow Democrats under the bus when they disagreed with him sure does look correct. I thought only Republicans were his "enemies." Menendiz has already paid for the trip on his friend's plane, so that's history. As far as using his office to benefit large donors, would awarding Ambassadorships to large donors fall under the same umbrella, because that happens a lot in DC!

How can Obama be accused of throwing anyone under a bus? I mean he can't do that and drive the bus at the same time....

and there is the little matter of the firm who drafted the Obamacare site.......no bid contract, right up there with this guy,

very few people have understood the gravitas of that deal. The company was under investigation by the RCMP at the time when they contracted them to build the interface. They had run up a $2 billion bill on a $1 million contract and it still wasn't working. It has since been scrapped, we may as well have paved the streets with the money.

and they "offered" a no bid open ended contract.

Oh, and Right after BO's two deadlines for Iran has passed and they have no deal. Right at the time Menendez and Kirk are going to push forward the bill for sanctions on Iran. Quite a coincydincy there, huh?

:coffeepap you're on to them

Oh am I.....and you're just figuring this **** out. Glad you can actually think out, at least the basics.

Yup you caught them. Your investigative work is very intriguing

I have to say it's refreshing that the Obama administration's Justice Department has found a crime they wish to prosecute.

Strange how this has been known for years, yet the charges come out only after menendez speaks out against obama's foreign policy......

Menedez would not back Obama on some key issues and publicly came out against some of Obama's policies. Normally these "conspiracy" allegations would be ignored at the DoJ and Obama would claim prosecutorial discretion or simply flat out denial and claim the "vast rightwing conspiracy" theory. However, this is what happens when a Democrat won't play ball with their leadership. A minor financial issue now gets the spotlight and is, I believe, primarily politically based. Menendez will be the "example" the DNC will use with their members as he's hung out to dry by his own. Some Republicans will certainly jump on the bandwagon because well... that's what partisan's do. The media certainly wasn't pushing for Menendez's prosecution - no one was digging to oust him other than some rightwing internet sites when the story first broke. Otherwise, this was an absolute snoozer of a scandal. Hell, even here in NJ it was page 4 below the line stuff.

Let's remember this is the same DoJ who refused to prosecute the IRS, the VA, various voter fraud / intimidation, improper campaign donors. Obama and the DNC need a whipping boy and Menedez fits the bill.

Well it got what BO wanted. As Menendez will Step down as the Ranking Demo on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Despite his fighting it out.

A Menendez adviser confirmed to Yahoo News that the senator will temporarily step down as the ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. But, the adviser said, he has no plans to resign and intends to vigorously contest the indictment, arguing that Melgen was a friend and that none of his official actions on his behalf were in exchange for gratuities and gifts.

“For nearly three years, I’ve lived under a Justice Department cloud, and today, I’m outraged that this cloud has not been lifted,” Menendez said at a news conference in Newark, N.J., on Wednesday night. “I am confident at the end of the day I will be vindicated.” ....snip~

Funny how the media doesn't address obvious political issues when (D) are the subject.

You're saying the DoJ doesn't have prosecutorial discretion? :lamo Funny stuff.

Heya Ockham. :2wave: This morning Menendez did mention about how some haven't liked his political stance and that he to, was aware of the timing.

Silly little liberal boy? What's that got to do with corruption in politics? It exists in both parties, and there's a long list of criminal republican legislators as well. Would we like to see to it that all criminals in congress get exposed, or just the silly little liberal ones.

And no doubt by coincidence-against a senator who is openly critical on the regimes foreign policy.

and Menendez is a true friend of Israel...Obama hates that

Nobody said otherwise. However, my OP was about Bob Menendez, not corruption in politics. Perhaps you'd like to start a thread about that subject so you can show the long list of criminal Republican legislators.

I'm going to both agree and disagree with your post.

I will agree that Obama has no love lost for him, and Obama uses the power of his DOJ (as well as his own bully pulpit) to go after his perceived or real enemies.

However, I will say that Menendez is as corrupt as the day is long. I remember when he was mayor of Union City. Guy's a snake.

But to your broader point, if he was an Obama ass kisser, he wouldn't have been touched. I don't remember the DOJ having such interest in such goings on in other lawmakers who commit malfeasance of an even larger scale. Coincidence? Hmmm....
