I'm assuming his breathing never changed.
The mental and emotional capacity of someone who's willing to fly a a plane load of innocent people into the side of a mountain would lend some clues as to why his breathing didn't seem laboured as he lost altitude and got closer to the Mountains.
He's either a Sociopath or is severely mentally ill.
Reason #1,641,652 as to why i will avoid airplane travel if possible: Possible Bat****-Crazy Pilot/Co-Pilot
Edited to add: I don't like to fly unless I absolutely have to do so. Luckily, I haven't had to for over 20 years. I feel perfectly safe riding my motorcycle anywhere I want, but am terrified to fly on an airplane.

I watched a press conference on Fox News this morning (forget if it was live or not), but they were talking about this and the CEO of Lufthansa looked like he wanted to put a shotgun in his mouth.
Once an individual being decides that it's own existence is no longer bearable/wanted/necessary.. The lives of others become incidental to that.
One instant simple fix would be to put a third pilot back in the cockpit, so nobody is ever left alone there. They were cut as an economy measure.
Some airlines already mandate that pilots must never leave the cockpit while airborne for short-haul flights, such as that one. Long-haul, you need three, any two awake.
I love the smell of face-palm in the morning!

“We do not believe any group of men adequate enough or wise enough to operate without scrutiny or without criticism. We know that the only way to avoid error is to detect it, that the only way to detect it is to be free to inquire. We know that in secrecy error undetected will flourish and subvert”. – J Robert Oppenheimer.
