We are here to show our compassion after this terrible accident.

We have mobilised almost 300 firemen, numerous people from the national gendarmerie - 300 of them. The first on the scene were the mountain gendarmerie, who know how to operate in this environment.

We have around 10 planes, and helicopters.

The violence of the crash leaves us little hope. However, we have all the resources at our disposal.

The efforts are being coordinated by the prefect.

"The plane, an Airbus A320 that carried young people, vacationers and others, crashed after an eight-minute descent from 38,000 feet, the managing director of Germanwings, Thomas Winkelmann, said at a news conference.

When French air traffic controllers lost contact with the plane at 10:53 a.m., it was flying at just 6,000 feet, Mr. Winkelmann said, and it crashed shortly afterward. The terrain in that area rises to an elevation of more than 6,000 feet.

Security personnel in Digne-les-Bains, a town close to the crash site, described a scene of almost unimaginable wreckage, with even the plane’s metal structures smashed into countless pieces."

"As investigators begin their attempts to discover the reasons behind the aircraft’s crash-landing, a pressing question will be why the plane descended when it did, and why the pilots did not communicate with air traffic control past that point."

Did the pilots experience an air leak, or a malfunction in the pressurization machinery, that keeps artificial pressurization in the cabin? If there was a pressurization problem it would then be logical to program the pane for a descent. The descent was apparently programmed, because the descent was uniform. Was the pressurization problem sufficiently serious to drop the oxygen masks? Was the auxiliary oxygen working properly? for how long? Did the crew miscalculate how long they could last on oxygen? Did the crew pass out soon after initiating the descent into the auto-pilot?

" In a fresh development the New York Times says one of the plane's pilots was locked out of the cockpit. Quoting a senior military official, who was speaking on condition of anonymity, it says the pilot was heard on the voice recording trying to smash down the cockpit door.

Quote "We don’t know yet the reason why one of the guys went out. But what is sure is that at the very end of the flight, the other pilot is alone and does not open the door.”

"Despite their painstaking search, they have still failed to locate the flight data recorder, which could prove vital in understanding what happened in the mysterious crash. In particular, investigators want to know why the plane deviated from its agreed flight plan and descended rapidly for eight minutes and why the pilots failed to respond to repeated calls from air traffic control. "

" experts pointed out that a fault in the sensors feeding information to the computer could cause serious problems.

Bob Mann, an American aviation consultant, highlighted the angle of attack sensors used on the A320.

“If it thinks a plane is about to stall, it will cause the nose to pitch down,” he said. “From the flight radar it looks like a nine minute descent at a constant 400 knots.”

"The freezing up of the sensors, causing the plane to drop suddenly remains a “compelling theory” for the AirAsia crash over the Java Sea just after Christmas, which also involved an Airbus A320, he said.

But in the latest accident there possibility of the crew having been rendered unconscious also had to be considered.

“Crew incapacitation cannot be ruled out, and there has been speculation over the possibility of an explosive decompression at altitude,” he said.

“This could possibly be linked to the age of the aircraft.”

NY Times is reporting that one pilot was locked out of the cockpit and the other never answered the knocks.

"reports that a senior military official involved in the investigation described “very smooth, very cool” conversation between the two pilots during the early part of the flight from Barcelona to Dusseldorf.

The audio then seems to reveal one of the pilots left the cockpit and was unable to get back in.

“The guy outside is knocking lightly on the door and there is no answer,” the investigator said. “And then he hits the door stronger and no answer. There is never an answer.”

"The last communication was a routine request to continue on its route, said Remi Jouty, the head of the accident investigation bureau, or BEA.

Then minutes later, at 10:30am, the Airbus A320 inexplicably began to descend. Within 10 minutes it had plunged some 32,000 feet from its cruising altitude of 38,000 feet, slamming into the remote mountainside at an altitude just above 6,000 feet, Jouty said.

With no distress call or other indication of anything out of the ordinary, French investigators struggled to solve the mystery. While alarming, the descent was still gradual enough to suggest the plane was under the control of its navigators. "

"At the crash site, a senior official working on the investigation said, workers found the casing of the plane’s other black box, the flight data recorder, but the memory card containing data on the plane’s altitude, speed, location and condition was not inside, apparently having been thrown loose or destroyed by the impact."

It appears more and more that something happened in the cockpit, what we dont know yet. We can speculate but I fear it will be a while before we know for sure, if ever.
