Militants kill 8 in attack on major Tunisian museum, take hostages, interior ministry says

Militants shot and killed at least eight people at a leading museum in Tunisia Wednesday and have taken several more hostage, the county’s interior ministry said.

Interior Ministry spokesman Mohamed Ali Aroui said on Radio Mosaique that only one of the dead in Wednesday's attack was a Tunisian. He did not provide nationalities for the others. Poland's Foreign Ministry announced that three Poles were among the wounded.

...Tunisia recently completed a rocky road to democracy after overthrowing its authoritarian president in 2011. It has been more stable than other countries in the region, but it has struggled with violence by Islamic extremists in recent years, including some linked to the Islamic State group. It also has extremists linked to Al Qaeda's North Africa arm who occasionally target Tunisian security forces.

Also according to this article, a "disproportionately large number" of those who have joined ISIS are Tunisian, and the museum attack is only a day after the confirmation of the killing of Ahmed Rouissi, known as the gained the "black box of terrorism."

Coincidence?

I would not be suprised if the attack on the museum was planned before the death of Ahmed Rouissi.

As a side note, Tunisians have a long history of practicing "Islam light". Though I doubt the place was ever Amsterdam, alcohol is freely available, their first Presdient married an unconverted Catholic, and the previous government banned burkas and also banned hijab variations that were not local. They also discouraged untrimmed beards (Islamacists seem to have aversions to razors).

Sadly, Tunisia has massive unemployment even by north African standards. This probably contributes to the bored, impressionable and unemployed youth drifting over to Al Queda and ISIS.

3 Poles wounded.....did they say if they took just foreigners or others?

Will be interesting to see if it is JAK-T or AQIM affiliates.

This is a minor concern, of course, but I find "interesting" the fact that museums and artifacts are so often the targets. "Interesting" as in damned philistines.

I hope you're wrong, sigh. Print media still reporting "only" 19. Even one fewer is a blessing.

They said the Tunisians sent in an Anti Terrorism Squad. That was a couple hours ago.

Lets not rush to judgement n stuff. ;) How could anyone get the idea that over 20 westerners murdered in north Africa could have anything to do with terrorism?

Cmon now, didn't they get the Emails?

How can anyone suggest that Obama is winning the war on terrorism?

When he took office, terror was on the wane, even Odie Obama said so. There were two war fronts, one being fought with allies and drones, and one he "ended" his own words.

Now we have a bloodthirsty gang of psychotics running rampant over half of Syria and Iraq, wars in six or seven other countries, an ISIS stronghold 300 KM from a frightened Pope who is calling for global warfare, and attacks coming weekly in new areas, the death toll rising as each hour passes.

And the US response?

"They need jobs"

Einstein once noted that insanity is doing something again and again and getting no change, Obama does the same thing over and over and gets change....for the worse

Obama is also still insisting that the US train and fund the "moderate" Syrian rebels- though there are very moderates still fighting against Assad. No doubt most of that training will filter to ISIS, Al Queda, Al Nusra etc.

I think Obama views himself as a mystical and mythical "enlightener" who brings western style democracy and Amsterdam style social tolerance to the Middle East. To do so, he needs "Arab Springs" in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya and Syria, despite the fact that such "Springs" dont bring democracy, and only open the door for ISIS to move into countries where they were afraid to go earlier.

That is remarkably insightful.

And it recalled what I had read of his "Lies my father told me..." or whatever, where he kind of paints his upbringing as "enlightened", his statements about "my Islamic faith" and also being a "moderate Christian" all point to a concept of himself as a man of the world. So, it makes sense that he would see himself a new kind of world king who brings peace and joy.

The only problem is he's incompetent

PS, Amsterdam may have a name for tolerance, but it is not. All of Holland, when compared to Canada is fairly bigoted, and in Vancouver we see them as near racists. and we have much better "medicine" in our cafes...

Heya Cryptic. :2wave: Dempsey was on the Hill today being questioned about arming those so called Syrian Rebels. Truly what a waste of money and time that is.

Thansk for the information about Amsterdam.

I think yopu are right about Obama's perception of himeslf as a demi king. Whether one supports his domestic policies or not, anyone should concede that Obama has a totalitarian streak:

- execution of US citizens sans any judicial oversight.
- Attempts to radically alter the way Freedom of religion is expressed by an executive mandate compelling religous orgainizations to provide contraceptives and abortaficiants. Obama also questioned whether religous groups are free to select their own leadership with out government oversight.
-Setting up a hotline where people were encouraged to inform on neighbors who told "lies" about Obamacare.
-Addressing the adoring school youth replete with recommended follow on activities*.

At the end of the day, whether is pro BC, anti BC, PC, non PC, rides in an APC, or scans in UPCs, any objective analysis should have concluded that freedom of religion is very broadly defined in the USA, and that the judicial branch was not likely to support sweeping executive mandates that change how that freedom is applied. Yet... Obama still pursued his BC agenda out of his secular messianic complex. His same secular messianic complex is now costing lives in the Middle East as he pursues his "enlightenment" agenda with out regard to the human costs.

* past presidents have addressed school children, but not nearly on the same level as Obama and did so with out "recommended" follow on activities.

Mornin RV. :2wave: Yep and another one avoided by the left. But don't worry once it happens Right around them. That's when you will see the panicking and then all that whining and crying, talking about. Why us?

Bumping up your thread NB. :2bump: They did say the Tunisians arrested 9 people. Now the Tunisians are talking like the King of Jordan is.

Islamic State Claims Responsibility For Tunisia Shootings.....

As Dan reported yesterday, there was a horrific shooting at the Bardo National Museum in Tunisia, where gunmen killed over 20 people. Most of the victims were European. While it was initially reported that ISIS was suspected to be behind the attacks, it’s now official (via WSJ):

In the statement issued by its media arm, Islamic State also warned of more attacks, saying the assault on the museum in Tunis was the “first drop of rain.” It didn’t state whether it was referring to further attacks in Egypt or elsewhere......snip~
