All that remains standing are the roof support columns

March 16, 2015

OUJA, Iraq (AP) - The tomb of Iraq's late dictator Saddam Hussein was virtually leveled in heavy clashes between militants from the Islamic State group and Iraqi forces in a fight for control of the city of Tikrit. Fighting intensified to the north and south of Saddam Hussein's hometown Sunday as Iraqi security forces vowed to reach the center of Tikrit within 48 hours. Associated Press video from the village of Ouja, just south of Tikrit, shows all that remains of Hussein's once-lavish tomb are the support columns that held up the roof.
Saddam was hanged in 2006 and buried in this mausoleum in 2007. Iraqi media reported last year that the body of Saddam was removed by loyalists. Its current location is unknown.

I didn't even know he got a lavish mausoleum... well... better off as rubble anyway, guy didn't deserve one.

I didnt even know Saddam Hussein had a tomb, I thought his body got thrown into a ditch or something.

Much ado about nothing.

Very little in Iraq has been off-limits to this long term mess we are seeing play out, no real reason to assume Saddam's tomb would be protected for one reason or another.

Funny they didn't dump him in the sea or blow his ashes out over the swamp.

I am ore surprised that they gave him a tomb.

I am too, but I also see it as a non-news event. The truth is Saddam did have support, even after his oust from power. The tomb may be a bit much but then again it being destroyed in fighting shows that there really is nothing off-limits between all these factions in the region going at each other.

They could fix it to look like a mass grave.
