Sandy Hook families sue estate of shooter's mother[W:52]

I hope they take all of her estate to warn others of the dangers of unsecured guns. There needs to be consequences if there is to be responsibility. Anything less is a sham.

(CNN)Families of children killed at the mass shooting andy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut have filed lawsuits against the estate of the shooter's mother, saying Nancy Lanza was careless and negligent in leaving a Bushmaster AR-15 rifle unsecured in her home.

Adam Lanza, 20, used the assault rifle to kill 20 first-grade students and six adults in Newtown on December 14, 2012.

The younger Lanza was mentally unstable and used his mother's Bushmaster to kill her before he went on the rampage at the school, and then killed himself.

At least eight lawsuits have been filed in Connecticut courts since January on behalf of relatives of 16 people killed in the massacre -- four adults and 12 children. Court documents also list two people who suffered serious injuries.

So an insurance company might have to pay out to them instead of somebody else and the company's policy holders will pay the cost. Quite the payday for the lawyers.

Idiocy. And all these ambulance chasing lawyers are taking full advantage of these families grief.

As BrewerBob noted, the mother DID die. I'd call that a pretty hefty consequence wouldn't you iguanaman?

Also according to friends of the mother the guns were kept locked up in the basement. Unsecure? HAH!

A friend of Nancy Lanza, who had done contracting work for her, was last in the home eight months ago and remembers seeing a lock box in the basement where Lanza kept her guns.
CNN ~ Shooter's mother wanted her son to fit in, friend says

These lawyers are going to have to prove that the guns were left out of that lockbox. GL on that.

I can't understand in the least what these families have gone through.

That being said, I also see no reasonable theory as to what suing Mrs. Lanza's estate will accomplish.

Other than to make the lawyers richer.

I don't understand this course of action at all.

So I take it that Connecticut is NOT one of those states where a Republican legislature has basically passed some laws providing special legal immunities and protections for gun companies and sellers so they cannot be sued as other companies may be sued?

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.... John Rogers

If a guy buys a Chevy Suburban, and then plows it through a crowd of people on a city corner killing a dozen or more people in the process, should the families of the deceased be able to sue Chevrolet????

What legal principle can be applied to leaving a rifle accessible To a legal adult who was not prohibited from owning a gun?

This is a sham case IMO I don't see how they can prove the elements of negligence, considering there is some evidence the guns were locked. I am suprised there still is an estate this late in the game ....
