As it happens, I own several hammers. None of them are stored in any more secure a manner than to be in my apartment, the door to which is kept locked when neither my wife or I are home, or when we are both in bed. Anyone who broke into my apartment, and searched for a hammer, would probably find one.

If someone steals one of my hammers, and uses it to commit a murder, should I be held liable?

Why should there be a difference?

More murders are committed with hammers than with rifles. It stands to reason that any of my hammers has a greater chance of being used as a murder weapon, than any of my rifles.

If I should be held liable if someone steals one of my rifles, and uses it to commit a crime, should I not at least be equally liable if someone steals one of my hammers and uses it to commit a crime?

I never said having guns in your house was negligent. Having guns in your house, unsecured, when you live with a violence prone person with mental illness may well be negligent.

As a side note I can't believe anyone would really treat a firearm with the same casualness they'd treat a hammer. Anyone who actually does shouldn't have a weapon.
Perhaps you should not be allowed to possess a hammer or any other dangerous tool, if you have so little grasp of the potential danger that such a tool represents, if misused.

Or be allowed to drive a car, for that matter.

nope-AR-15s are designed for legal civilian use. Killing might be the byproduct of some of those uses

Sorry, hey, but I'm not going to let you off the hook so easily here. Why are you so desperately trying to avoid answering a very simple question by dishonestly substituting the word "killing" for the word "murder"?

The correct comparison would be hammers to all firearms not just rifles.

I'll ask you the same question I've asked someone else. You have a pencil, a hammer and a loaded handgun on your kitchen. A stranger comes into your kitchen. From a safe guarding standpoint do you treat them all the same? Put them all away because you're afraid they'll be used as weapons? Leave them all out? Secure some but not others?

It is part and parcel of it. Firearms were created to shoot people and other living creatures. That was their intended purpose.

It certainly can be depending on the situation and the facts involved.

    The thesaurus says it is

    http://www.thesaurus.com/browse/kill

and it works the other way also
