A coin is not going to destroy the wall - they didn't fire an RPG at it. Blowing this out of proportion seems a bit silly and equating scratching initials into a wall with the arson of someone's home is down right ludicrous.

Have you ever been to the Colosseum? There's areas of graffiti all over it in all sorts of forms if I remember it correctly, as I'm sure millions go through it each year and have for quite some time. It's just that these two got caught by being extra stupid and taking a selfie which would no doubt go on instagram or facebook. The punishment should fit the crime and that punishment should be a fine that causes some pain as well as possibly - a ban on traveling to Italy if they wanted it to be extra severe.

    Past graffiti in the Colosseum:

“I think if Thomas Jefferson were looking down, the author of the Bill of Rights, on what’s being proposed here, he’d agree with it. He would agree that the First Amendment cannot be absolute.” - Chuck Schumer (D). Yet, Madison and Mason wrote the Bill of Rights, according to Sheila Jackson Lee, 400 years ago. Yup, it's a fact.

did you miss the part where in my earlier post I said a big fine should do?

Anyways, you prove my point. All of those carvings will cause the structure to PREMATURELY fail, ceteris paribus.

The fact that it won't be seen as a result for 100s of years doesn't change the fact that it is still structural property damage.

I am in very rare agreement with Top Cat on this one. They should face jail time as well as a very stiff fine. I would feel the same about a European tourist pulling a similar stunt on a US monument.

    No I didn't miss it.
Did you miss it where I stated you equating scratching initials with a coin to arson was ludicrous?
Did you miss where I stated at the beginning of this thread a fine would also do?

You made badly thought out and executed points such as equating using a coin with arson. That such scratching of initials "destroys" a wall.

Which is why it's called graffiti and probably which is why the Colosseum has been scratched on for over a thousand years as my pictures point out, and was my recollection of going through the Colosseum.

The fact of it having been vandalised in the past gives more reason not to to it now, when we are supposedly better educated and more responsible.

What is it like living in a world where erosion rate is apparently not a function of surface area?
