Considering the geographic isolation of these groups relative to each other it isn't as though the Islamic State is going to be able to shift troops or support on any meaningful level or vice versa. You might see some advisers take to the field depending on how serious these commitments actually are but more realistically these will likely remain relatively compartmentalized conflicts.

How so Sherman. Ansar al Sharia has spread from Yemen to Libya, even before ISIS did. Plus now we have those in Algeria that have pledged to ISIS. Plus the Benghazi Emirate. Then those in the Sinai pledged to ISIS. So they are in Egypt.

Which now they are moving into N.Africa and will push to the Atlantic Coast.

Then they had those In Tunisia pledge to ISIS too.

An Al-Qaeda-linked Tunisian group has offered backing to the Islamic State organisation that has overrun chunks of Iraq and Syria, becoming the third jihadist group to do so this week, a US-based monitor says. Okba Ibn Nafaa, whose militants Tunisian armed forces have been hunting in mountains near the Algerian border for two years, has identified itself with Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, the international jihadist network's North African branch.

On Tuesday, AQIM and the Yemen-based Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) urged jihadists in Iraq and Syria to unite against the common threat from a US-led coalition assembled to fight IS. "The mujahedeen brothers in the Okba Ibn Nafaa Brigade from... (Tunisia) are supporting, endorsing, and strongly sustaining the State of the Islamic Caliphate," the group said, quoted by SITE Intelligence Group late Friday. "They are urging it to move forward in breaking the borders and crushing the thrones of the tyrants everywhere," SITE quoted a statement on Facebook as saying....snip~

If anything, I tend to suspect that this is more likely to negatively impact BH, as it would reduce any aid they could get from AQIM. BH is facing an actual multinational (if not always "combined") effort now, and it's hurting them. This may have been a poor move on Shekau's part.

But it's good for ISIL. They needed a win for the Caliphate.

Just as the “Islamic State” in Iraq was exposed as a fictional cover for what was also essentially Al Qaeda (as reported by the NYT in their article, “Leader of Al Qaeda group in Iraq was fictional, U.S. military says“), ISIS too is just the latest and greatest re-visioning yet.

    The NY Times huh?

The authors also emphasise that IS is not new, but rather emerged from the ashes of Al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI), one of the most brutal foes of the Americans following their 2003 invasion. AQI was largely defeated after the US convinced local tribes to rise up against them -- a strategy known as "The Awakening", which has deeply influenced IS strategy.

"From the beginning, they've been obsessed with the Awakening," said Hassan. "They've done everything to prevent it happening again: built sleeper cells, bought loyalty, divided communities. "They've succeeded in making internal resistance practically impossible. No tribe will fight them, because they will find themselves fighting their own brothers and cousins."

Although the Baathists were originally a secular movement, Saddam introduced a "Faith campaign" in the 1990s that sought to Islamise society. "Very few people have focused on the impact of that campaign," said Hassan. "It radicalised many Baathists and they combined the violence of the regime with that of jihadism, making them even worse than Al-Qaeda." "But they have combined religion, geopolitics, economics and much more in their ideology.....snip~

While I've no use for Barrack Obama and tie him to the thousands of deaths now going in the Middle East, I don't buy this.
