Obama and Others at Selma

Amazing story and a great anniversary. I'm not American but I would be proud of such of of event, its what makes you great and even more amazing that a black president can enjoy it. Kudos America.

It depends on how it's celebrated. If it is politicized and suggestive that nothing has changed since that original march, then it's harmful. If it is a celebration of the original movement to gain equality and of how far we have come, then it is wonderful. Unfortunately there are too many activists like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton who make a living keeping perceived racism alive.

Let me rephrase that last part "They'd be more pissed at black on black crime then throwing a fit when a thug get's shot for attacking a cop." That's the part that boggles my mind. "Hey 500 blacks were killed in three cities by other blacks, but this kid... he robbed a place and then punched a cop and got shot, let's protest THAT...

Seriously.

Yeah, because one totally has anything to do with the other. Oh yeah and you can't be against both of those things, it's an either/or situation.

Call me when there are marches and protest of black on black crime, call me when we hear the people of Chicago are rioting over a gangland shooting.

Oh, wait... you'll never call....

Oh wait, I can because there are. There just isn't much if any media coverage. It's the same thing that goes with the argument "Why don't Muslims condemn extremist violence?" They do, it's just that the media doesn't make a big hullabullo about it.

Could you find us some links on this? When was the last major protest against black on black killings?

Cause I did a google on protesters march against black on black crime and got a page full of anticop protests... but not a single link to what I searched.

It's amusing watching you flail here, do go on.

I just wanted to note that I just saw a broader picture of the one showing Obama and Lewis recreating the march and in that picture, to the far left of them, or the far right as the picture faces you, are walking George W. and Laura Bush. I had not heard nor seen any mention of them in the major news reports of this story and perhaps that's GW's doing since he wants to keep a very low profile in retirement. It shows the man has great respect for America and American history and contrary to many who claimed otherwise when he was President, George W. Bush does not hate black people - I hope that's clear.

Yeah, you got a page full of anti-cop protests because that is what is currently in the news and being covered by the major networks.

"Beyond the data, there’s the anecdotal evidence. And in short, it’s easy to find examples of marches and demonstrations against crime. In the last four years, blacks have held community protests against violence in Chicago; New York; Newark, New Jersey; Pittsburgh; Saginaw, Michigan; and Gary, Indiana" (Black community is concerned with black-on-black crime: Suggesting otherwise is ignoring the facts.)

Look here as well, it includes a number of links to blacks people protesting black-on-black crime. (Why Don't Black People Protest 'Black-on-Black Violence'? - The Atlantic)

For NJ more recently look here (In Newark, an anti-violence rally takes over intersection | NJ.com) and Chicago look here (Anti-violence activists protest across city, including at Obama home - Chicago Tribune)

EDIT: And look here for more NJ black-on-black crime protests (http://www.nj.com/union/index.ssf/2..._action_as_shots_fired_elsewhere_in_city.html)

And while they may be categorized as anti-gun violence protests, we know that it is anti black-on-black crime as these places are majority black towns.

Oh it happens, in small groups, from time to time. You had to use the same link twice and have 4 examples from 2012 through 2014.

Very good.

No how many antiploice protest?

I think you'll find it's more then 4 in 2 years, yet the number of blacks shot by police is a fraction of those killed by other blacks.

That was the real point.

...

Obama marched at Selma, but he wouldn't march, in Paris, against Isis. Does that tell you anything?

It tells me this:

"Strawman [SUP]Strawman [SUP]Strawman [SUP]Strawman [SUP]Strawman [SUP]Strawman [SUP]Strawman[/SUP][/SUP][/SUP][/SUP][/SUP][/SUP]

In Selma Obama said: ""We’re the slaves who built the White House and the economy of the South. (Applause.) We’re the ranch hands and cowboys who opened up the West, and countless laborers who laid rail, and raised skyscrapers, and organized for workers’ rights."

What ever happened to... his philosophy of "You didn't build that."

Seems he wants it both ways.

Watching all the outrage that Obama is celebrating Black History Month really is amazing.

I am sorry, he is black. Do you know how you can tell? If you saw him and didn't know who his parents are, you would describe him as being black.

No, I wouldn't. And that's not how you can tell.

LOL! Just so you know, because you don't seem to, his racial makeup is not open to debate, or what you really wish it to be. He is what he is, with a white mother and a black father. That is a plain, cold fact.

This is a great example of the liberal mindset at work. 2+2=5 if they say it over and over enough, facts be damned.

With your definition, probably most of the black people in America are not black at all.

Yes.....he is okay with ISIS.

Here's a quick test:

A few decades ago, how easy could he get a taxi?

How about this one: In 1958 Selma, would he have to use the "Colored" entrances?

Bonus question: If George Zimmerman saw him walking down the street, how would he describe him?

No, I wouldn't. And that's not how you can tell.

Using your standards there are hardly any black Americans in our country.

It doesn't tell a partisan hack anything he didn't already think.

Did you miss the "We'll never forget." part?

Yes I understand the significance of the event, but that doesn't mean I let the sins of 50 years ago define the reality of today. It doesn't mean I look at our great nation and see the blood shed on that bridge and think ?Man what a ****ty country we got soooo much to over come!" I look at today where I served under black officers, male and female and NO ONE THOUGHT TWICE ABOUT IT. I have friends and co workers whose skin color... just doesn't ****ing matter. I have neighbors who I greet that happen to hail from lands far and wide, whose skin, heritage and social norms are not mine. And no one I know gives two ****s that they do.

We care: Are you good, honest, law abiding folk who try to be the best you can be? That's it.

What happened on that bridge 50 years ago, was a terrible tragedy, what happened today was proof we've moved past such stupidity. Only those who cannot see the past as a guidepost and instead are defined by it, are the ones that need help, the rest of us just want to move on.

Okay. So, what was the BS that got you so upset?

Maybe most of us are just past racism and tired of the BS. WE'll never forget, but it doesn't define us.

I certainly didn't describe my experience of the 50th Anniversary event as a defining moment for me. After all, unlike President Obama claiming that his conception was the culmination of his parents coming together as a result of events that occurred in Selma, AL 50 years ago, I was only 2 years old when the march across the Edmund Pettis Bridge took place. So, until learning about it during history class many years ago, the event no more defines me than slave owners of the past and the brutality that some bestowed upon their Black slaves would define you today. So, what BS from what was said or done at the Selma 50 year anniversary event has you so pissed off?

Is is it the fact that once again this date in history is being celebrated and the fact that it acts as an annual reminder of wrong doing troubles you? If so, why? I mean, we remember fallen soldiers on Memorial Day every year. We remember Pearl Harbor and 9/11 every year. We even celebrate our nation's independence on the 4th of July every year. Why does this day that essentially is just one more day that reminds people to "never forget the wrongs that were committed, yet celebrate in the very fact that 'we have overcome racial hatred and bigotry'" to a large degree bother you so?

If what you've posted above is true and that you do embrace people of various racial and/or ethic backgrounds, the only thing that should anger you is when people don't recognize the wrong that was committed and refuse to recognize that many people have gotten past the hate.

I can't believe that someone hasn't posted about this yet. Or maybe there isn't a great big African American presence on this forum. Either way, it's a pretty big media story.

Thousands gather to commemorate Bloody Sunday anniversary

Well, it's not a really big story, and not controversial. He went to a commemoration of Bloddy Sunday events. A worthy event. Another day in the life of a U.S. President, esp. a part black one.

Well, my standards are just plain, old facts. I know those are a thorn in the side of the left, but too bad.

Yes plain old facts, as you are using them, establishes that the vast majority black Americans are also white Americans.

As long as you are being consistent and this is the position you hold then so be it.

It should be noted that using your standard of usage renders the terms "black" and "white" useless - seeing that technically the majority of people we refer to as "black" or "white" often have in their genealogy other races.

Are you talking about people that are mostly black, and have other races mixed in? Because I am not. I am talking about Obama, touted as the first black president, who is just as much from the white race as he is from the black race.

In my opinion he is not the first back president, that is reserved for an actual majority black person that gets elected president.

So you are moving the goal post?

I was talking about the vast majority of the black population in this country that have white, i.e. European, genes in them.

You are the one who wants to be meticulous about this. If they are part white then they are part white - that has been your sentiment. It is a fact after all.

Genetic percentages vary no matter how close a relative of a different race is. You can have a black mother and white father and end up with more genetic make up from your father. Making your genetic percentage primarily white.
