First on CNN: Feds prepare criminal corruption charges against Senator Bob Menendez - CNN.com

The Justice Department is preparing to bring criminal corruption charges against New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez, a Democrat, alleging he used his Senate office to push the business interests of a Democratic donor and friend in exchange for gifts.

Color me surprized. I didn't think the Holder Justice Department would ever go after a fellow Democrat. Certainly not a sitting senator, anyway.

On the other hand, let's see if they actually file the charges.

The plane trips I get, but the rest of it is a slippery slope. In an alternate scenario, if a Senator from Washington or Illinois advocates for something that benefits Boeing and someone at Boeing makes a big donation, is that really corruption? Shouldn't representatives actually be able to advocate for the businesses in their district/state and those businesses be able to support the people who support them?

I don't understand why you think Holder wouldn't do his job as the chief law enforcer? Would you expect a Republican to only prosecute Democrats?

Yes, that's how it is to them. Everything is a partisan ****.

Both sides are corrupt as hell. So for people on either side aisle to gloat over corruption charges against the other side is both sad and funny.

Suspected is suspected IMHO, who did it should be irrelevant and I am happy indeed to see that the justice department is preparing a corruption case against Menendez.

That he is a democrat should be an even bigger incentive for the Justice department to go after someone of their own for corruption. You must at all time prevent even the appearance of any chance of a cover up, especially if the suspect is one of your own political party.

Heya Declan :2wave: Menendez can fight this and outlast BO peeps term til he hits pasture and then becomes the Most Insignificant Former President we ever had.

Looks like BO peep and his inner circle will have to figure out another way to remove Menendez from blocking his Iranian deal and play with Cuba.

Feels more like they realized their record of only bringing charges against republicans was so glaringly obvious, they had to find a sacrificial lamb. These are really bad cases. I think just about every former governor and attorney general in VA said McDonell did not break any laws and yet here he is on the way to jail because he used a telephone and the internet to do something the Justice Department turned into a crime that wasn't a crime beforehand.

I think you are Right on the aspect that they would notice that chink in BO's armor.....it was a thought that the Democrats might have noticed that once he started his own progressive group. (which that's the BO Bots terminology) That they would figure out how they were used and could be replaced. That they might want to stand together as a party and not put him over their own selves.

BO's problem always was.....telegraphing to those who he never liked.

Menendez stepped over the line, with everything that's been alleged previously, when he heaped praise on Netanyahu and indicated he was in favor of renewed sanctions on Iran. That's playing for the wrong team, I think. Obama is very serious about his deal with Iran.

Has Holder ever gone after a prominent Democrat before? I know that there has been no action on the IRS, and he backs up Obama on everything, even amnesty for illegals.

Sponsored a Bill with Mark Kirk out of Illinois to.....and then geared up opposition to BO to go with Sanctions if the Iranians stall or there is no good deal. Now hopefully some of the other Democrats will wake the **** up and take notice.

The Best way to hurt BO peep.....is to go after those close to him. Then he can show the American people just how human his ass really is.

Didn't take long for this thread to turn into a Conspiratorial BO peeps is mad at Menendez over Iran spew.
Never mind that the Federal investigation has been going on for several months in front of a grand jury.

Did you even notice that Menendez excoriated McConnell for trying to advance the DEM sanctions bill before the Iran talks are done?
But heh, carry on with your anti-Obama noise, even though your fellow righties in this thread aren't with you; kudos to them .

You are sorely misinformed, there is NO amnesty plan from President Obama.

To be honest, I thought these were just smear allegations but apparently getting on the wrong side of Obama can be detrimental to one's political career.

No I didn't believe Holder would go through with charges and I'm still skeptical until I actually see a copy or Menendez is formally charged. What some of our left wing friends in this thread seem to forget is everything with this President is political and given his and the DoJ's past prosecutorial discretion on other subjects like voter intimidation and Obama and Holders blatherings on race, one would have assumed as I did, that this would be glossed over or, that the charges were bogus. Perhaps Menendez would like to go back in time and support Obama's Cuba initiative and stayed silent about Iran. Look at it this way, if they get Menendez now, Obama can pardon him later. Win win!

Glad you can figure out what BO peep is bit miffed about.....we knew you could do it.

Enough votes in both houses to implement sanctions which they as I understand can do. The Senate would have enough Dems to override a veto.
The thing is, would the other countries continue with sanctions?

Since it will be the grand jury that indicts or not.
And this investigation has been going on for a very long time.

Do you even know what it is about?
Watch Menendez next hour in his news conference .

Yeah, I know what its all about and its not about Hookers. What do you think he will resign?

That's the big question mark. I don't know that Europe has the appetite. They're already under pressure. Israel has clearly stated it's intentions, so I don't know that Obama is left a lot of room to do anything other than lay the deal on the table, and hope. I think it's doomed to failure, but only time will tell whether that's entirely true or not. There's little doubt that the nations of the ME would prefer sanctions to nuking up, but Saudi Arabia, at least, has given signs they're fully prepared to do just that. I don't think Obama wants to be the president presiding over the introduction of a nuclear ME.

You whine when they do, and complain when they don't.

Hyperbolic hypocrisy at it's finest.

And might you tell the rest of us in what dictionary or lexicon of phrases is "being surprised" is considered to be a synonym for whining? And where did the poster ever oppose his being charged?

Hypocrisy? No, looks more like you are just making hay out of a strawman...at it's finest.
