Lovely story. It's a shame the Mail and I'm guessing the OP are treating it as a joke. The boys look very happy. I wish them well.

I've never been remotely bothered who rubber-stamps marriage certificates. If the state wants to do it or the various chuches/temples/whatever so be it. What I don't want to see is that certain domestic arrangements are rewarded by tax-payers money, while others are not. That's the business the state should have no hand in.

Because other people getting married has absolutely nothing to do with you. Please quantify how other people's marriages effect your life directly. Be specific.

I think religion impacts society negatively. Does that magically give me a right to tell you what religious beliefs you can and can't hold? You do not have the right to force your view of society on other people. And frankly, the world needs more people loving each other, and that's always a good thing.

It was over 15 years ago that the first court case concerning same sex couples and marriage in the US won, in Hawaii, prompting DOMA to begin with. So your contention that 15 years ago people were laughing at the possibility of same sex marriage here in the US is ludicrous unless you're speaking about those people who are too ignorant or blind to what is going on in society to know. It was almost 20 years ago that I was arguing for same sex marriage being legal in a high school english class.

Well hardly the first such marriage. First publicized maybe, but that would be about it. Polys have been getting married in the US for years, not to mention across the globe. The fact that there is one that is all one gender isn't really surprising.

Because the majority want the majority of the benefits and more importantly protections that come from being married and there is really no one who is being treated unequally by giving such benefits, since we give various benefits to various people for doing various things in this country, particularly taking on certain responsibilities. Foster parents are given money from the government, military service members, even veterans, are given various benefits from the government and even private entities, people who own certain property or grow certain types of food are given money from the government to do something they want. Even just being recognized as a legal relation to someone else besides spouse grants many of the same benefits that come from being a spouse. The other benefits are viewed as beneficial to society.

Let people call thier unions whatever they want, the government should have no say.,
Not true, as is evidenced by the fact that so many of those bans getting struck down now included anything resembling marriage, by another name. That is a claim only being made recently when the writing on the wall could easily be seen by those conservatives who were in a frenzy to ensure no recognition was given just a decade or so before in so many states.

Neither religion nor opposite sex couples own exclusive rights to the meaning of the word marriage or what it is used to describe, who can use that word for their relationship.

plus, if you decide you are "against gay civil unions" there is no doubt you are calling for the oppression of peoples, not simply "protecting the sanctity, blah blah blah of marriage".
Religion does not own the word marriage, for anyone. It doesn't matter how much they want to claim it so there is absolutely no reason to change what we call legally recognized unions, now known as "marriages", just to appease those too petty to share a word.

Because "social change" is a part of life, part of time. It happens because no society is perfect, not even close. There will always be people who are not satisfied that society is the way they want it to be. However, when people are being oppressed because of that dissatisfaction of other people, because those others don't want certain people to be able to do things that they can do, that is when change is needed unless there is evidence that the change will cause some sort of harm. Cost/benefit analysis on this particular social change, in allowing same sex couples to marry, easily shows that it doesn't cost society nearly as much as it benefits society. On the other hand, allowing anyone to have more than one spouse legally recognized as such, easily costs society (especially monetarily) more than it benefits society. There could be ways to alleviate the costs to society by taking certain steps beforehand, but not enough people are willing to make such a huge social change, even of those who would benefit from being able to have multiple spouses.

15-years ago people were laughing because the thought of it was absurd.
