Clinton had no official State Dept. email address - CNN.com

Washington (CNN)Hillary Clinton did not have a State Department email account while she served as America's top diplomat, a senior state department official said Monday, and instead used a personal email account during her four years on the job.

The New York Times first reported Clinton's exclusive use of a personal email account on Monday night.

Hillary Rodham Clinton exclusively used a personal email account to conduct government business as secretary of state, State Department officials said, and may have violated federal requirements that officials’ correspondence be retained as part of the agency’s record.

Mrs. Clinton did not have a government email address during her four-year tenure at the State Department. Her aides took no actions to have her personal emails preserved on department servers at the time, as required by the Federal Records Act.

Wow. She created a private domain to house her email on the first day of her confirmation hearings in 2009, and never had an official federal email account.

How is it that nobody at the federal level thought to ask why everything that went to Clinton was off the books?

Laws are used to keep the opposition in check - not to hinder your political allies or appointees, ;)

Clintons don't operate by law or morality.

This has been long established.

I saw that and it is about as far out as they come.

Just so we're clear, the Secretary of State hardly needs an official email address (and especially doesn't need to cull out all the spam, viruses, and other junk). He or she has plenty of aides to handle correspondence.

That being said, doing government business from a personal email account is a definite no-no.

Also, the security people would have vetted and scanned and scrambled and protected and all I would hope. But you never know.

I hope who ever this matters to investigates her to the fullest. I wish them all the best in their investigations and hearings.

I hope she is released from prison in time to take the oath of office...If not She will be the first President in US history to have her swearing in... in prison.

If I were Secretary of State, I wouldn't have one either.

Eugene Debs got more votes in the presidential race that took place when he was in prison than he ever did when he was free. (shrug)

Unlikely.

She had ZERO impact when she lent her support and influence to Democrats who lost their jobs in the 2014 midterms.

In the Fox News article about this it says that past secretaries of state also used had personal email addresses. I also really like that Jeb Bush said "I made my emails from when I was governor public, why can't you do the same?" Then I looked at Jeb Bush's email and found this at the bottom of one of this emails:

"Please note: Florida has a very broad public records law.
Most written communications to or from state officials regarding
state business are public records available to the public and
media upon request. Your e-mail communications may
therefore be subject to public disclosure."

What a louse! I also assume he had at least one personal email account. I mean, if state or federal officials want things kept off the record, they'll make sure it's off the record. And at the same time, the powers that be aren't going to allow the Secretary of State to operate independently and without oversight. I don't understand why this story is any more angering than what happens every day in Washington.

Well, if she had no official government email address and, instead, used a personal email account this should make finding all those "secret emails" about Benghazi easy to find, don't you think?

Ya, the transparency should shine through now.

Is it my imagination, or does it seem like since Obama took office that democrats have acted like the rules no longer apply to them? They seem to defy the law at will and don't give a damn who knows.

Hilary Clinton stepped down from Secretary of State in 2013. The Federal Records Act amendment that requires personal emails to be preserved on department servers did not become law until late November 2014...

In that case, she did nothing wrong and should be praised.

<sarcasm off>

She smart, she knows how else would she get away with her disastrous incompetence with her handling of foreign affairs.......ie private emails that could be destroyed. If only that freakin' idiot Lois Lerner thought of it.

How convenient.

she ..like her husband is a criminal..

Then why was she conducting business with a private email? Your logic would lead to the conclusion that no email address was necessary. Private or Govt. And it's not only a no-no, it's illegal.

Uhm, no. You're talking about the Presidential and Federal Records Acountability Act of 2014 which allowed a a means to disicipline those that broke the Federal Records Act. Under Bill Clinton, emails became federal records meant to be archived in accordance with the Federal records act of 1950.

Why are you asking me? I certainly don't believe that any email address was necessary: for her job. She would still have every right to use email as a private citizen for personal business, however.

You said that she wouldn't need one for official business (aides and all that). She obviously did, just wanted it off the books.

From my understanding the "Federal Records Act" (AKA, 44 U.S.C. Chapter 33) was updated by this Act which was signed in 2014.
I am talking about that act. But this is the provision im talking to:"It also requires official government business done via personal email to be forwarded to an official government records system." House passes bills on IG audits, presidential records | TheHill

Under Bill Clinton, emails became federal records meant to be archived in accordance with the Federal records act of 1950.
From what I read, no such action took place.
"On November 26, 2014, President Obama signed into law the Presidential and Federal Records Act Amendments of 2014. This new law modernizes records management by focusing on electronic records, and complements efforts by the US National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and the Office of Management and Budget to implement the President’s 2011 Memorandum on Managing Government Records. Major updates to the Presidential and Federal Records Acts include:
Strengthening the Federal Records Act by expanding the definition of Federal records to clearly include electronic records. This is the first change to the definition of a Federal record since the enactment of the act in 1950."
National Archives Welcomes Presidential and Federal Records Act Amendments of 2014

Can you point to this amendment Bill Clinton signed into law?
