Exxon Mobil Settles $9 Billion New Jersey Environmental Case for $250 Million

    Sweet deal for Exxon.
Roughly 3.5 % of what was asked in damages.
Appears the taxpayer takes it up the .........

A long-fought legal battle to recover $8.9 billion in damages from Exxon Mobil Corporation for the contamination and loss of use of more than 1,500 acres of wetlands, marshes, meadows and waters in northern New Jersey has been quietly settled by the state for around $250 million.

The lawsuits, filed by the State Department of Environmental Protection in 2004, had been litigated by the administrations of four New Jersey governors, finally advancing last year to trial. By then, Exxon’s liability was no longer in dispute; the only issue was how much it would pay in damages.

Actually, it also sounds like a sweet deal for New Jersey too.

Christie is reducing pension payouts. He's criticizing Obama constantly even though Obama's not going to be his, or anyone's opponent in 2016. He's recently come out against Common Core, even though he ferociously promoted it in 2010. And now he's letting a large corp. of the hook for billions.

It is wild watching even moderate Republican politicians pander to the far right of the GOP, even though the far right makes up what, only 25-30% of the GOP base? It's like the moderate voter in the GOP just doesn't matter anymore to any of the GOP politicians. The moderate Republican has become the silent majority of the GOP.

That amount doesn't even cover the court costs let alone the damage to the wetlands. This just proves that government isn't for the people or by the people....

Perhaps if moderate republicans got their own TV station they might get heard.

But don't, whatever you do, allow any pipelines......

Exxon still hasn't fully made good following the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill, and now they want to bring the super tankers into the pristine waters of Juan de Fuca straight.

    Yes I know.
Though tankers make that run daily.
The issue I have on the Northern Gateway pipeline to BC is the end point. Should not be Kitimat, but Prince Rupert.
And the Govt has increased no fault liability to 1 Billion up from 35 Mil. It should be unlimited from the get go.
If they want to ship - they accept the risks along with the profits.

Canada raises liability for offshore oil spills to $1-billion - The Globe and Mail
The federal government will raise the bar for oil companies operating off the East Coast and in the Arctic, increasing the limit on their liability for environmental and other damage from a blowout or oil spill to $1-billion.

Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver said the $1-billion cap – up from $30-million in the Atlantic and $40-million in the Arctic – is part of the government’s “polluter pays” approach to resource development. But environmental groups complain it could still leave taxpayers on the hook for massive costs, noting the cleanup from BP PLC’s Gulf of Mexico spill has cost more than $40-billion

Prince Rupert is closer and the better shipment point.

It would appear New Jersey concluded they were never going to collect $8.9 billion. Seems after all these years, the actual damages were arrived at, and agreed to.

Tankers make the run yes, but little ones.

I am not so sure the Rupe is a better alternative, the waters of Prince Rupert Sound are volatile as well. Also the difference would really mean changes in the route, I am not even sure it could be done across that terrain.
