Obama vetoes Keystone XL pipeline, leaving it in limbo

Fifty permanent jobs, gone! Fifty jobs! Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

What's gonna happen next, hundreds of thousands of new jobs get created this month?! Damn this president and his recovery! :D

Who cares about jobs? Honestly. It's not like the pipelines employ millions of people in crucial positions. They're all temporary jobs as long as oil stays above a certain price. Once it drops, as we've seen recently, people get laid off in the thousands. That's what's been happening in Alberta. I wish the economists - who are pseudoscientists, by the way - would stop talking about such minuscule job creation as if it's the best thing since sliced bread. The keystone pipeline only benefits the usual suspects, and most of that oil is being exported anyway. It's not like it will make one iota of difference to domestic prices.

World demand for oil jumps by 1 million barrels per day. At this rate we will have to drill every last piece of ecosystem to get at diminishing supplies.

Obama's veto won't last. Once the pendulum swings back to the GOP being in power, as it inevitably will, we will see the wholesale destruction of all common sense again. I guess it's a temporary victory for... somebody?

yeah, that kind of sums it up. You can hardly come hat in hand to Ottawa and say "please can we have more oil" when you just cost the industry billions and went back on your word. Neighbors can be neighbors or they can be neighbors and friends. Obama does not see us a friends, but then again neither did Bush who would be tarred and fathered here, perhaps the most hated president since Nixon who was attacked by a knife wielding Canadian on his one and only visit here.
I agree with your trades points but don't believe Canadians, apart from the far left, hate any Americans. The Canadian left is much like the American left in that they can both hate rather easily. Also Obama doesn't see any of America's former Allies as friends.

Nearly every infrastructure job is temporary. So I guess you are against the president's request for this spending is bogus.

At one time Canada relied on over 90% of its trade with the US but it was recognized a couple of decades ago that this dependence was potentially harmful for Canada and this latest deal demonstrates what can happen when ideology trumps common sense.

Canada's Free Trade Agreements

Certainly Canada will sell its oil elsewhere but I would have preferred it go to our long time neighbors.

I doubt you could find enough people in one place to start a hockey game that don't want the best, warmest relations with the US. We stand proud of our neighbors and the friendship we hold; we have not forgotten the thousands of US travelers given free lodging in our homes when stranded by the air traffic shut down in 911. There isn't a Canadian I know that is not proud that we stepped up to the plate and took on the heavy lifting in Kandahar - with poorly equipped troops as well.

Where the issue for most of us starts is when we see Americans forget we are even a friend. The issue comes in with a dick head like Obama who, as I mentioned, threatens the most important trade deal for both of us as campaign rhetoric, proceeds to officially open phase 3 with a promise to "fast track" because the nation needs the oil and the jobs, and then play three years of games, delaying and finally vetoing.

He can lie all he wants to the American people and they obviously don't care. But don't lie to us. Besides, here where lumber was one of the three "kings" of the economy, talking trade deals at all is risky business since the softwood lumber extortion. 10,000 jobs permanently lost is not soon, if ever forgotten

Even then it is mostly rhetoric. They have to be careful since the left as NDP is very chummy with the Democrats, the last national elections had Obama trained operatives working for the NDP.

Whats next are higher oil costs and more dependency on the middle east. Congrats.

Most people everywhere recognize Obama as an incompetent boob and those who voted for him a second time would be ashamed if they felt shame, but that was not all of them. Like neighbors everywhere we have our moments but there is nowhere in the world, with the exception of Australia and New Zealand, where people have better neighbors.

You may be right and a deal may be reached but two years plus is a long time to have men and materials laying about. I have a feeling they foresaw this and will just continue to move west. That may be good for Canada but...

Depends upon cost to produce. Some oil shale was profitable at 60-70 a barrel. One compnay that has their production in the Bakken fields hedged all production till well into 16.
Oil sands are high cost, low rate of return based upon from what I read a 50 year plant. Based upon initial up front costs you can easily look at 10 B plus.
Next are the oil refineries in the Gulf coast- they upgraded to handle Cdn heavy crude. This crude from what I understand is also heavy in other materials that can be used in the Petro chemical industry. That I am not sure of and I hope someone will expand upon this.
For those on the opposing side of these types of pipelines, Cdn heavy crude, well 10's thousand of miles intersect both countries and the president can veto cross border lines.
Thing is he cannot veto cross border shipments by rail.
From Oil sands, beef with country of origin labeling, lumber to only US Companies can bid on a number of US Govt funded projects, yet they are open and free to bid on them up here.

But up here the feeling by many is the US keeps on kicking us in the balls. And we need to diversify our markets.

It is Republicans that made this an "issue". Doing international projects like this are not part of Congress's job. What did the GOP offer Obama in exchange for XL? Nothing. That is how important it really is to them.

Jobs. Energy self sufficiency. Lower prices for his constituents (the American People).

and 3,900 "temporary" (2+ years) jobs. Temporary jobs that would have someone making $20-$40 an hour vice $8.50....while gaining experience.

very poopoo-able....

This has got to be THE MOST overblown political topic I have seen in a long time.

From a lefty perspective...what's the big deal? There are already TONS of pipelines from Canada pumping tar sands oil all over America...this is just another one. So why now are you freaking out?

And for the righty's? Who gives a crap? This is just one of many pipelines...it is not the only one. And have you never heard of a train? They will just ship it - at slightly higher cost - via train.

This is, imo, NOTHING more then both sides digging into an issue they think they can hang their hats on.

But the Saudis must be pleased.

The Saudis and all the oil producing terrorist supporting naions. Obama is working on his legacy.

I like how you put "temporary" in quotation marks. :)

I'm glad, because most people in America have been on a job less than two years.

Aren't all construction jobs "temporary"?

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Tuesday, as promised, swiftly vetoed a Republican bill approving the Keystone XL oil pipeline, leaving the long-debated project in limbo for another indefinite period.

The U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, after receiving Obama's veto message, immediately countered by announcing the Republican-led chamber would attempt to override it by March 3.

So despite the public by ober 2 to 1 margin wanting the pipeline, Obamas got his pen.
CNN/ORC Poll: Most Americans Want Keystone Pipeline Built

The GOP needs just 4 more votes to over ridethe vetto...I would not count them out just yet...........
