Obama vetoes Keystone XL pipeline, leaving it in limbo

Whats next are higher oil costs and more dependency on the middle east. Congrats.

The oil coming from Keystone would be exported from the US to foreign refineries, where the oil can be sold BY CANADA at a higher price.

Also, the pipeline eliminates US trucking (middle class) jobs and rail jobs. On average, to run one railyard in North Dakota you need about 50 full time employees, including contractors. Trucking jobs in the oil industry pay higher wages than most.

Keystone does NOTHING in regards to helping the US economy.

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Tuesday, as promised, swiftly vetoed a Republican bill approving the Keystone XL oil pipeline, leaving the long-debated project in limbo for another indefinite period.

The U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, after receiving Obama's veto message, immediately countered by announcing the Republican-led chamber would attempt to override it by March 3.

So despite the public by ober 2 to 1 margin wanting the pipeline, Obamas got his pen.
CNN/ORC Poll: Most Americans Want Keystone Pipeline Built

Senate Dems who's terms expire next year are probably going bug****. Obama just screwed the Democrats' chances of retaking the Senate in 2016.

It is cleaner/safer to transport oil via truck?

We know its not.

And most Americans disagree with you. Obama is catering to his environmental lobby, thats all. This is politics, what did you think?

Perhaps, tp take your point a step further, instead of pipelines, the government and oil industry could combine to hire people with pick-up trucks and each truck would be allowed to carry one barrel of oil to its final destination. This would help the auto corporations because millions of trucks would be required, the tire industry would certainly benefit, and millions of people would be employed.

That's not the reason he gave but we only have his word on that.

"The presidential power to veto legislation is one I take seriously," Obama said in his veto message to the Senate. "But I also take seriously my responsibility to the American people. And because this act of Congress conflicts with established executive branch procedures and cuts short thorough consideration of issues that could bear on our national interest — including our security, safety, and environment — it has earned my veto."

I like the part where he says it "cuts short thorough consideration of issues that could bear on our national interest". Six years and five committees just isn't enough!

Unchecked borders and the Spread of ISIS are of less 'national interest' than Keystone.

But, on the bright side, he wasn't afraid to say "Keystone Pipeline" in case he gave it credibility.

This has got to be THE MOST overblown political topic I have seen in a long time.

From a lefty perspective...what's the big deal? There are already TONS of pipelines from Canada pumping tar sands oil all over America...this is just another one. So why now are you freaking out?
....

There are tons of pipelines in the USA carrying Canada's tar sands oil all over.

I remember the 2010 Enbridge tar sand oil spill quite vividly.

For those who are interested in timeline of the Michigan tar sands oil spill and how the company did not even inform the EPA that this not an ordinary oil spill but that the spill was from tar sands oil the following gives a lot of interesting details.
The oil spill contaminated a creek that fed into the Kalamazoo River which empties into the Great Lakes.
Thankfully it was stopped before it contaminated the Great Lakes which supplies drinking water to millions of persons.
Here is the article with the timeline.

Pretty scary stuff.

A black goo stopped just 10 feet from the metal cap that marked his drinking water well. Walking on the tarry mess was like stepping on chewing gum.

That was a terrible spill and one due to human error. Apoparently the technolgy has increased where an accident like this if far likely to happen.

No one - the company, the Citizens, or their government, ever wants this to happen but it has happened and may happen again. Luckily no human lives were lost.

Such was not the case in Lake Megantic, Quebec. Lac-Mégantic oil spill even worse than first feared, investigation shows

The fact is that we can only work to make these spills less likely, and thats true of the collection and distribution of all natural resources. The final destination of this oil, cars, will probably kill many people as well.

At least this spill had, finally, a happy ending.Enbridge oil cleanup on the Kalamazoo River finished, all sections of the river open for public use | MLive.com
