Homeland Security Funding Fight Over Immigration Poses Risks for Republicans

    Starting Friday-
They promised new leadership- Now DHS is getting ready to shutdown.
No threats around, yep, close er down.

The House Speaker tells the Senate, we did our part.
    What is it with Boehner?

WASHINGTON — After promising an era of responsible governance and an end to federal shutdowns, congressional Republicans find themselves mired in an immigration fight that could cause funding for the Department of Homeland Security to run out on Friday.

It is a risky moment for the new congressional majority. A nasty partisan impasse over funding for a vital agency could damage the party’s brand just months after Republicans took power, and the impact could carry over into the next election cycle.

I think most people are sick and tired of these kind of games on both sides. Fund the department and quit playing games with an agency that is designed to secure the homeland (Department of Homeland Security). You want to make your fight over presidential decrees overstepping into the Congressional domain, fine, but don't do it with something like this. The congress should focus on gaining some street cred before it goes pulling stunts like this.

I know, people are going to say that critical jobs within the department will still be filled despite a shutdown, but that's not the point. It's going to make their jobs tougher and I don't think we want to do that with this kind of department. Find another way to prove your point.

This will leave a bitter taste in everyone's mouth for congressional republicans if it goes forward as a shutdown.

I agree with the Speaker on this one. Obama seriously overreached. While I agree with his motives, if he gets away with it, the next republican President (in about 12 more years) will overreach the other way. We have checks and balances, and the power to control the purse is about the only way the Imperial Presidency can be reigned in.

The Republicans put poison pills in which they know will cause a shutdown, and then blame the Dems for the shutdown because the Dems won't vote for the poison pills that the GOP put in. The GOP has a pair the size of church bells.

Looks like the Democrats want to be the Party of No.

No, I look to the Speaker on this. Could be one of the weakest in history, though he does carry a damn fine tan year in and out and can cry like a newborn. Cepting they do not cry on cue.

In general I agree with you. Though the Coast Guard, which falls under DHS, does actual real work that matters.

It would not be a serious issue if Obama would stop abusing his power.

Having said that, i think the GOP should stop being idiots, pass a DHS budget and live to fight another day on immigration.
