Walmart Gives 500,000 Workers A Raise

The cost of living is lower in Quartzite Arizona than it is in Chicago, just as the cost of living is lower In Chicago than it is in Manhattan. So the amount varies from place to place. An individual's wage should be relative to the cost of living in their location, Enough so that they don't need Joe tax payer to kick in to help meet their basic bare bones needs.

they can if they have the skills to be able to be paid that much money.

no college no high school diploma good luck making something other than 7.25 an hour if you can even get a job.
only a high school diploma good luck getting more than 7.25 an hour without a ton of skill in a certain area.

as I said you can't even define what you are asking for but demand employers pay your arbitrary amount.

please define a living wage 10, 20, 50 dollars an hour. if you can't then you just have an appeal to emotion argument.

I see the check out girl who works at the local dollar store using a SNAP card at the neighborhood grocery store. So that tells Me that her wage at Her dollar store job isn't enough to cover bare bones needs, so we're all picking up the rest of the tab. Pay her the minimum that is needed to survive here and then we don't have to pick up that tab.

that would be her fault. maybe is she had a better skill other than cashier or stocking shelves she would make more money. just a thought.

it's proof Doug McMillon was serious about increasing wages ...like he said when he was first hired as CEO.

sorry man, you can't give unions credit for this one... unions had exactly nothing to do with it.

The pressure has been on for a long time, so it worked.

This country will always have need of low skilled workers for the service sector. There are also trades jobs that cannot be contracted out. The argument comes with what you're going to pay such workers and walmart has decided that for now $10 an hour is okay. We cannot have a country wherein low skilled labor lives in huddles of poverty because the market wants to keep them poor.

There a;ways going to need shelf stockers and cashiers, do you have any PhDs in mind for the jobs? There also plenty of of educated people out of work these days, so $7.25 an hour is good enough for them too eh?

I worked at Sam's Club for a number of years and a guy there I worked with had a masters in Nuclear Physics. It was always fun when he messed something up because he'd always have this coming... "you know, it doesn't take a nuclear physicist to do that".

whatever helps you sleep at night, Unionman.

You have a deep prejudice against unions for whatever reason, and that's what runs your thinking.

Too bad actually.

I asked you about the extra money these workers will make and if it is worth it to join the union. Extra means above and beyond what they are already making.

It is not a hard concept to grasp.

Well thanks for clearing that up. Joining a union is up to workers themselves and no one else. If they think it's worth it, then they'll join. So you don't so much have a concept.

you need to stop telling me what i believe... your track record of being accurate is incredibly low.

It's only obvious. walmart has capitulated to public and union pressures to pay better wages and get their workers off of welfare and it has finally come to fruition. You don't like labor unions and your opinion make it staggeringly obvious. I wonder why you can't just admit that times are changing and walmart see the handwriting on the wall?

You believe onions smell good on your breath. And not the delicious Vidalia kind either. The nasty loud California kind.

we have this today
those huddles of poverty; and they are all across rural America
and those impoverished residents vote against their self interest, pulling the lever for republican candidates
we elect the politicians we deserve

and this base wage increase by walmart is a tactical maneuver to keep the department of labor at bay while Obama remains in the white house. that DoL should be looking into the reason why 1.4 million employees in almost 5000 locations have never been able to elect one bargaining unit location to enjoy the benefits of unionization
but notice that the Dol is not
and likely now, will not

I don't disagree with you: walmart has always lied its way through life and that's why unions, media and the public at large have been after them. The organizing drive has however kept up the visible pressure and worked for higher wages, so to deny the union's pressure to bring this about doesn't tell the whole story in my opinion. And if the union gives up, then when walmart gets what it wants in Washington, tinto some hen they'll pull the rug out from underneath their workers. So the union has duty to the workers to keep it going and organize them. What walmart may do, is what Fed Ex's Fred Smith did, and slide a note into a bill placing themselves under the Railway Act: Smith was panicing over the Teamsters.

I fully oppose labor union in the public sector... i do NOT oppose them in the private sector..... tell me again which sector Walmart operates in again?

I'm sorry that screws up your batting average even more... but you shouldn't say things about me you don't know are true.

you have no proof of your claims... not a shred.... when/if you provide such proof or evidence, we'll talk further.

ugh.. sorry to hear that... get well, bro.

Thanks man. I'm just glad its happening on this do nothing weekend rather than on my road trip next weekend.

The proof has already been provided.

hopefully it runs it's course quickly.... i've been battling some sort of sinus malady for almost 2 months with no improvement.
I have no faith in the medical professions right now...money grubbin' pill pushers, the lot of them

your opinion is not proof....please provide proof the union played a hand in this wage increase... provide proof the new CEO submitted to union pressure.

The proof is in the pudding and the OP article.
