The short version is that Putin is corrupt as hell, and a murderer to boot. Essentially, Russia is governed by cruel criminals seeking to line their pockets and project their image as hard thugs...somehow that image is quite appealing to the Russian psyche. Perhaps even the ideal.

Putin is in the open and will physically crush dissent in his country. The more democratic a nation, the more the dirty **** has to be done in secret or with a powerful lot of domestic propaganda.

There's dirt in all politics. I don't think we've ever had a President accumulate such great wealth while in power though. I would argue that democracy limits the corruption and swindling as much as is possible with respect to other government models.

Democracy certainly makes corruption more difficult and the corrupt need be craftier, we can agree.

I knew Putin was a wealthy man several years ago. The show they put on for Sochi was not bad, money was involved Russian style. But I didn't know he was worth that much, assuming the estimate is correct. Humans at play.

But then I didn't know they were paying Brian Williams $10 million a year either. This is not my area of expertise, but it appears we finally persuaded those Russians to abandon communism.

If the democracy includes the absolute rule of law against government employees who defraud the people, then I agree with what you say.

If we don't have the rule of law in society, democracy is an illusion.

    Good point.

Perhaps when Putin is in the grave they will have wised up.
    Doubtful.
The Czars are in the grave.
    Stalin is in the grave.
All the "leaders" that followed Stalin are in the grave.
Yet, despite a rich history of oppression, Russia seems to gravitate towards dictatorial rulers.
Maybe the rooskies just like to be bossed around.
Have you seen "Fifty Shades of Grey"?
No matter how cynical I become toward politicians, it's never enough.

Or, even if the rule of law is there but it's enforced selectively.

By some guesstimates I have read, Putin has lost a nominal $100 Billions personally. Mark you, he is no poor man.
