Costa Concordia captain sentenced to 16 years in jail for disaster

ROME, Feb 11 (Reuters) - An Italian court convicted the former captain of the Costa Concordia cruise liner on Wednesday for his role in the 2012 shipwreck that killed 32 people and sentenced him to 16 years in prison.

Francesco Schettino was commanding the vessel, a floating hotel as long as three football pitches, when it came too close to shore and hit rocks off the Tuscan holiday island of Giglio.

Schettino was charged with multiple manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning ship in one of the highest-profile shipping disasters in recent years.

However it is far from certain whether he will actually go to jail before the end of Italy's long appeals process, which can take years.

Took long enough.

I don't know. Why do you ask?

We were wondering about capital punishment for white collar bad guys this morning in another thread.

OK. I did see that. I don't envision capital punishment for manslaughter though.

In any case 16 years sounds okay for mass manslaughter.

This is the thinker who said he slipped and fell into the lifeboat, right?

He's about to start falling into the laps of prison inmates. He will make a fine wife, no doubt.

That's the guy.

Looks like they figured 6 months per person.

You think 5 years for each dead would be better? They would have to be a little optimistic about his longevity. But that would be fine by me.

Seems like a pretty high price to pay for dinner with your mistress and an ego boosting drive by. A good example of why work and play should never mix.

Ive never been on a cruise and have no plans to. I just dont like the idea of being stuck in a ship while on holiday, sure there are port of calls and all that but Id rather be in a place where I can travel around.

I've been on one cruise and loved every minute of it. I went in to it with the same thought process you have. Go figure.

OK then, what was it that made you like the cruise? Ive an open mind. :)

Keep in mind that it was a short one. 4 days down the coast of Mexico to Ensenada and back with a couple of stops. The coast line was in view for the most part. You mentioned one thing. The port of calls. We went on a wine tour on one of them. On the ship we met a lot of great people and had a great time. My brother went on one of those 21 day trips to Hawaii and back. That might be too much.

OK got it. Maybe I might try a short cruise after all. If my son agrees to it and when he gets older.

That would be my advice. Try a short 3 or 4 day cruise. If you like it, it fuels the fire for a longer one. If you don't, you're only out a long weekend, but have a conversion starter for the future.
