(Reuters) - A senior Israeli official suggested on Friday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been misled into thinking an invitation to address the U.S. Congress on Iran next month was fully supported by the Democrats.
Netanyahu was invited by the Republican speaker of the house, John Boehner, to address Congress on March 3, an invitation Boehner originally described as bipartisan.
The move angered the White House, which is upset about the event coming two weeks before Israeli elections and that Netanyahu, who has a testy relationship with Democratic President Barack Obama, is expected to be critical of U.S. policy on Iran.
"It appears that the speaker of Congress made a move, in which we trusted, but which it ultimately became clear was a one sided move and not a move by both sides," Deputy Israeli Foreign Minister Tzachi Hanegbi told 102 FM Tel Aviv Radio on Friday.
The interviewer asked if that meant Netanyahu had been "misled" into believing Boehner's invitation was bipartisan, a characterization Hanegbi did not contest.

It seems that some Israeli officials allied to Bibi are stating that he was "mislead" into accepting the invitation. They state Bohner claimed that this was a move supported by both sides of the aisle in Congress, but it is increasingly looking like it was not. However Hanegbi stated that Bibi will not be rescheduling, or canceling his speech he plans on giving to congress.

Perhaps Boehner did underestimate what low levels the Democrat party will stoop to. You'd think he'd have learned by now.

Republicans. Always the victims in this giant charade.

I think it is supported by most of both sides of the isle. What you have is the Dem Congressional leadership through gritted teeth backing the President. You've also got some new blood, not much new blood, but some who have been reared on Ilan Pappe revisionist BS and find now the right time to flex where they'd otherwise be kept in line.

I guess official Israeli Consuls are "stooping to new low levels" too then?
"Israeli consuls general in the United States have warned the Foreign Ministry to expect fierce negative reactions to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s planned March 3 speech to Congress, including from U.S. Jewish communities and Israel allies." They simply understand that we've elected a buffoon who seeks to ruin our relationship with our closest ally on the planet.

Yup. Totally. But hey, I get it, it all swings back to Obama. Consul are warning that the speech is going to gain negative reactions not just from Democrats in Congress, but US Jewish communities, and Israel and US allies. But yea, lets just go with, "Its Obama!"..

Most Democrats support his speech. It's a directive from leadership that's insisting they distance themselves. And why would the Jewish community be against the leader of Israel speaking to Congress? That's absurd.

We were mislead on Obamacare too. Can we just cancel it now?

But conservatives dont believe in evolution..

Yes, we do. Just not in the atheistic way you want us to. Science and Christianity do not conflict at all, at much as you'd like to believe.

But this isn't the thread for that.

Really? That explains why Netanyahu's re-election bid is in jeopardy.

The speech is set weeks before Israel’s own elections, which Netanyahu is in danger of losing. It also comes as congressional Republicans seek to pressure the Obama administration to take a tougher line in negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program.

Netanyahu is widely expected to use the address to Congress to call for sanctions against Iran, which the administration argues could submarine the delicate negotiations.

...

Asked if the speech would be postponed or canceled, Hanegbi said, "What would the outcome be then? The outcome would be that we forsake an arena in which there is a going to be a very dramatic decision [on Iran].”

Anyone who thinks this was anything other than a strategic move by Republicans (Boehner) and Netanyahu to garner support from the Jewish community both foriegn and domestic, AND place Netanyahu on the world stage using the U.S. Congress as his podium to speak tough to the world-at-large (re: Jews and Christians) against anti-Israeli aggression (Iran) is just fooling themselves. Unless you've checked out on world history you missed the part where prior to 9/11 their most formidable enemy in the ME was Iraq. Thus, it's very clear what Beohner and Netanyahu were trying to do: garner support for Netanyahu on the world stage and show that he's tougher on radial Islam from the ME than the U.S. President.

Spkr Boehner knows he was wrong and now the rest of the world knows.

Greetings, JoG. :2wave:

"Let me make it clear that we will never turn our backs on our steadfast friends in Israel, whose adherence to the Democratic way must be admired by all friends of freedom. " John F Kennedy November 9, 1959

When Soviet Premier Aleksei Kosygin asked President Lyndon Johnson why the United States supports Israel when there are 80 million Arabs and only three million Israelis, the President replied simply; "Because it is right." June 1967 (during the Cold War)

"The special relationship between the United States and Israel still stands, Our total commitments to Israel's security and our hope for peace is still preeminent among all the other considerations that our Nation has in the Middle East ... But there need be no concern among the Israeli people nor among Jews in this country that our Nation has changed or turned away from Israel." Jimmy Carter May 26, 1978

Three former Democrat Presidents speaking above. Then along comes some of the current crop of Dems in DC who want to boycott Prime Minister of Israel Netanyahu's speech! Let them - they won't be missed!

His speech? His right to speak, yes. Even the White House said he has the right to speak to congress. No one is saying otherwise. Some Democrats have cancelled already, some will i suspect in the future. But I think the majority of Dems will go to the speech. But do they support what he is going to say will be the key question...

1.)Not every Jewish American has to love Netnayhu. They are a Democracy afterall with several political parties with several political leanings. Not every Jewish American is a diehard zionist or even pro zionist like Netanyahu is
2.) Look at polling data and compare that to Netanyahu and his positions.. Hell the biggest reason he is coming here is to throw hawkish rhetoric around about Iran and to try to undermine the Obama administrations current nuclear talks, yet 84% of American Jews are against that position... Hell Netnayhu
-"What is striking is how dissimilar the mainstream of Jewish Americans is to the ruling Likud Party in Israel, headed by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu..... 31% of Jewish Americans in this poll said they did not feel attached to Israel. Another 39% are only “somewhat” attached. The strong Israel nationalists are only about 30%"
On how American Jews are Mostly the Opposite of Israeli PM Binyamin Netanyahu | Informed Comment
-"The survey found that 84 percent of American Jews would favor either strongly or somewhat a deal with Iran that would alleviate tough sanctions on the Iranian economy in exchange for Iran’s agreement to limit its nuclear program to civilian purposes and accept inspectors at its nuclear facilities."

-Hell this campaign is supposed to be neck in neck...
3.)From the link itself
-"Sideman said he was told about the criticism by Jewish and non-Jewish activists who care about Israel and keep in touch with the consulate. “The speech is seen by them as sticking a finger in the eye of the president and the administration,” he wrote. He said the primary supporters of Netanyahu’s speech are groups identified with the most conservative side of the U.S. political map, like the Republican Jewish Coalition, the Zionist Organization of America and Christian evangelical leaders. “It is our impression that these people’s support for the speech stems from their identification with, and admiration for, a move to defy and humiliate President Obama, more than from the importance they attribute to the Iranian issue, which should be the center of the speech,” he wrote."
